Movie auteur Shyam Benegal, the pioneer of Indian parallel cinema, died on the age of 90 in Mumbai on Monday, December 24. Benegal was affected by age-related illnesses and kidney points. The final rites of the director had been held on the Shivaji Park Electrical Crematorium in Mumbai this afternoon.

The legendary filmmaker was admitted to the intensive care unit at Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital, simply days after he turned 90. December 14 marked Benegal’s ninetieth birthday.

Regardless of age-related illnesses, together with frequent hospital visits for dialysis 3 times every week, Shyam Benegal was dedicated to his ardour for filmmaking until the very finish.

All through his profession, Shyam Benegal obtained quite a few accolades, together with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honour in cinema. He was honoured with the Nationwide Movie Award for Finest Characteristic Movie in Hindi seven instances and obtained the V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

The legendary filmmaker was accorded a 21-gun salute on the Shivaji Park Electrical Crematorium. 

Shyam Benegal is survived by spouse Nira Benegal and daughter, Pia Benegal.
