Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is the subject of a CBI chargesheet in an excise policy case.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and others in the Rouse Avenue Court, Delhi, in connection with the excise policy case. This comes after Kejriwal’s judicial custody, which was extended by the court, ended on July 25.
Details of the Case
- Arrest and Charges: The CBI arrested Kejriwal under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PC Act) related to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy. The agency has identified Kejriwal as one of the primary conspirators.
- Role of Vijay Nair: The CBI has implicated Vijay Nair, the former media in-charge of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a close associate of Kejriwal, for his alleged involvement. Nair reportedly demanded undue gratification from liquor producers and traders since March 2021 for incorporating provisions favorable to the AAP in the excise policy.
- Allegations of Hawala Transactions: The CBI claims that ₹44.45 crore was transferred through hawala channels to Goa between June 2021 and January 2022, which was used in AAP’s assembly poll campaign. This is part of the ₹100 crore bribes the AAP allegedly received.
Previous Developments
- ED Involvement: On March 21, Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Delhi liquor policy scam case after raids at his residence. An 11-member ED team conducted the search under a warrant related to the money laundering case.
- Supreme Court Interim Bail: On July 12, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Kejriwal in the ED-probed money laundering case linked to the Delhi Liquor Policy Case. The CBI had previously arrested Kejriwal on June 26 from Tihar Jail while he was in judicial custody under the money laundering charges registered by the ED.
Political and Legal Repercussions
The chargesheet and subsequent arrests have significant political and legal implications for the Delhi Chief Minister and his party, AAP. The ongoing investigations and legal proceedings will be closely watched as they unfold.
