August 21, 2024 Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is expected to replace Greg Barclay as Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Sources have confirmed to NDTV that Shah will succeed Barclay, who said he will not seek a third term, in November.
Barclay’s Decision and Shah’s Candidature
Mike Baird, the president of Cricket Australia, and other members of the ICC board are among those to whom Greg Barclay has informed his intention not to run for reelection a third time. Barclay decided to step down after learning about Shah’s intention to assume leadership. With the backing of the cricket boards in Australia and England, Jay Shah seems to have all he needs to assume the role of chairman of the Indian Cricket Council.
Historical Context
Shah, the home minister of India’s son Amit Shah, will go down in history as one of the few Indians to hold the position of ICC Chairman. Only two people have held this position: Sharad Pawar (2010–2012) and Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997–2000). As Shah officially takes over from Barclay, he will be the third Indian to hold this prestigious position.

Election Process and Shah’s Position
According to ICC rules, the previous need for a two-thirds majority has been replaced with a simple majority of nine out of 16 votes for the election of the chairman. He has a decent probability of being hired due to Shah’s support. By August 27, 2024, present directors are expected to submit nominations for the ICC’s next chairman. The next term will start on December 1, 2024.
Shah’s Future in BCCI and ICC
Shah will have to serve a three-year cooling-off period after the completion of his term as BCCI Secretary in October 2025. According to the BCCI constitution, which was ratified by the Supreme Court, an officeholder may only occupy office for six years before they must undergo a cooling-off period. Shah will be allowed to work in two positions for a total of eighteen years: nine years in the state association and nine years in the BCCI.
If Shah joins the ICC prior to the conclusion of his tenure with the BCCI, he will have four years left in his current role there. At the age of 35, Shah will become the youngest chairman in the history of the ICC, marking a significant turning point in both his career and the history of international cricket. read more details
