The Ava Hotel, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, has appointed Matt Kleefisch as general manager ahead of the hotel’s highly anticipated Summer 2025 debut. With nearly two decades of leadership experience in luxury and lifestyle hospitality, Kleefisch will oversee all aspects of operations as The Ava Hotel prepares to welcome guests to the heart of one of California’s most distinguished wine-tasting destinations.
Kleefisch began his hospitality career at just fifteen years old, working as a brunch server at a Texas country club before earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University, where he gained hands-on experience at the renowned Statler Hotel. His management journey took him to La Costa Resort & Spa, followed by a pivotal role with Azul Hospitality at Koloa Landing Resort & Spa on Kauai, during which he helped lead the resort’s transition into a Marriott Autograph Collection property. Kleefisch later expanded his expertise in Downtown Denver, CO and Austin, TX, where he oversaw operations at two newly acquired DoubleTree Hilton Hotels. Most recently, he served as the Vice President of Hospitality Operations for Carter Hospitality, overseeing their portfolio, which includes Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa in Texas Hill Country, along with three additional hotels, two of which are located in Temecula Wine Country.
Now returning to Azul Hospitality Group, Kleefisch brings his deep industry knowledge and passion for Paso Robles’ rich viticultural heritage to The Ava Hotel, located at the corner of Pine and 10th Streets. Under Azul Hospitality management, the hotel will introduce 151 thoughtfully designed rooms and suites, Paso Robles’ largest rooftop destination, versatile event spaces, and three distinct dining experiences, including an elegant Mediterranean coastline-inspired restaurant by Chef Julien Asseo.
Kleefisch has relocated to Paso Robles with his wife, Frances, and their dog, Astro, and looks forward to becoming part of the local hospitality and wine community.
