Prime Minister Modi Advocates for Uniform Civil Code in Independence Day Speech
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a forceful case for a uniform civil code during his Independence Day speech this morning, saying rules that divide the country have no place in a modern society and must be repealed.
“The Supreme Court has regularly conducted talks on a unified civil code and issued rulings because a major portion of the population believes, and rightfully so, that the existing civil law is a community civil code, a discriminatory civil code.
The Constitution informs us, the Supreme Court tells us, and it was the dream of the Constitution’s creators. So it is our responsibility to fulfill it,” the Prime Minister said from the ramparts of Red Fort, two months into his third term.
“There must be extensive talks, everyone should express their views, and laws that separate society based on religion must be repealed. They have no place in modern society. The time has come for a secular civil code. “And then we will be free of religious discrimination,” the Prime Minister stated.
Earlier, the BJP platform for the Lok Sabha election said that the party believes a unified civil code is in the best interests of the nation. Several BJP-led state administrations have already begun to create a common civil code.
In this context, the Prime Minister’s words indicate that the administration intends to handle this sensitive subject on a pan-India level during its present term.
