Alstom Teams Up with FirstGroup and Eversholt Rail in Groundbreaking Fifty Million Pounds Overhaul of Class 222 Trains to Revolutionize UK Rail Travel for Lumo’s Stirling to London Service

Alstom, a global leader in sustainable and smart mobility solutions, has entered into a £50 million (€59 million) contract in collaboration with FirstGroup and Eversholt Rail for the refurbishment and maintenance of five six-car Class 222 trains. This development is a significant part of the upcoming open access passenger services between Stirling and London, under FirstGroup’s Lumo brand, set to launch soon.
Key Components of the Contract
The agreement comprises two main elements, each contributing to the modernization of the five Class 222 trains. The initial part of the contract includes a Train Services Agreement (TSA) with FirstGroup, estimated at around £40 million (€47.5 million). Alstom will carry out the maintenance, overhauls, servicing, and cleaning of these trains at its Central Rivers facility in Burton upon Trent, with the work to be completed over the next five years.
The second aspect of the contract focuses on the fleet modernization program in partnership with Eversholt Rail, worth around £10 million (€12 million). The work will take place at Alstom’s Widnes site, with the key objectives being the installation of new, ergonomically designed seating, a complete repaint of the train exteriors to match Lumo’s branding, and the enhancement of passenger Wi-Fi for better connectivity onboard. The Wi-Fi upgrade will be delivered by Nomad Digital, a subsidiary of Alstom, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, specializing in onboard connectivity solutions.
Additionally, the modernization will see the installation of new CCTV systems for enhanced security and the implementation of Intelligent Engine Start-Stop (IESS) technology. This innovative system automatically shuts down and restarts the engine when the train is stationary, improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, aligning with Alstom’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
State-of-the-Art Maintenance Facilities
Alstom’s Central Rivers facility boasts advanced technology and state-of-the-art equipment, featuring a double-head lathe, nine dedicated maintenance tracks, two lifting platforms, and specialized HVAC repair and gassing services. The facility also features an Automated Vehicle Inspection System (AVIS), a controlled emission toilet (CET) facility, and an automatic intelligent train wash system. The depot can stable up to 37 trains and perform overnight servicing for up to 26 units, ensuring optimal efficiency for ongoing operations.
The Alstom Transport Technology Centre in Widnes, which opened in 2017, stands as the UK’s largest and most advanced centre for train modernization. This facility integrates modern digital principles, making it the ideal location for the overhaul of intercity trains. The Widnes site will support the ongoing modernization efforts of the Class 222 fleet, playing a crucial role in the project’s success.
Modernization for Enhanced Passenger Experience
The refurbishment program will not only improve the operational capabilities of the Class 222 fleet but also significantly enhance the passenger experience. The ergonomic seating and the full exterior repaint will ensure that the trains align with Lumo’s sleek, modern branding, offering a visually appealing and comfortable travel experience. The upgraded Wi-Fi will cater to the growing demand for seamless connectivity, especially as travelers increasingly rely on digital services during their journeys.
With the installation of CCTV systems, passengers will enjoy a heightened sense of safety and security during their travel, which is essential in ensuring a positive travel experience. Furthermore, the inclusion of the IESS technology will contribute to better fuel efficiency and sustainability, lowering the environmental impact of the trains.
Reconnecting Communities and Strengthening Rail Services
The five refurbished Class 222 trains are scheduled to re-enter service with Lumo next year, offering direct services between Stirling and London Euston. This service will connect several key stations, including Larbert, Greenfaulds (serving Cumbernauld), Whifflet (serving Coatbridge), Motherwell, Lockerbie, Carlisle, Preston, Crewe, Nuneaton, Milton Keynes, and London Euston. This new route will introduce the first-ever direct connections from Whifflet, Greenfaulds, and Larbert to London, enhancing accessibility and strengthening transportation links for these communities.
The introduction of open access services, such as Lumo’s new routes, plays a vital role in promoting regional connectivity, particularly for underserved areas. Open access rail operators like Lumo are privately funded and carry both the commercial risks and rewards of their services. This model has been recognized by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) and the government for its ability to drive economic growth, provide additional capacity on core routes, and contribute to a modal shift away from more carbon-intensive modes of travel.
A Step Forward in Sustainable Mobility
The upgrade of the Class 222 trains forms a key component of Alstom’s FlexCare suite, providing customized services that support each phase of a train’s operational life cycle. This service includes operations, maintenance, parts supply, overhauls, and modernization, all designed to enhance fleet performance. Alstom’s expertise in maintaining over 35,500 vehicles worldwide demonstrates its capacity as a trusted partner for servicing both Alstom and non-Alstom rail assets.
The contract is projected to generate 50 new positions across Alstom’s two facilities, with additional job opportunities created throughout Alstom’s UK supply chain. This not only strengthens Alstom’s presence in the UK but also boosts local economies by creating skilled jobs and supporting the wider rail industry.
This £50 million contract between Alstom, FirstGroup, and Eversholt Rail represents a significant step forward in the modernization of the UK’s rail network. The enhanced fleet of Class 222 trains will offer better services to passengers, improve connectivity for underserved areas, and contribute to sustainability efforts in line with Alstom’s vision of promoting smart and sustainable mobility. With its innovative technologies and state-of-the-art facilities, Alstom continues to drive the future of rail transport in the UK and beyond, ensuring an efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly travel experience for all.
