Alstom Launches Revenue Service on Kanpur Metro Extension: Five New Underground Stations Open
Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has officially started revenue operations on the newly extended section of Corridor I of the Kanpur Metro. This expansion adds five underground stations, significantly enhancing Kanpur’s urban transit network and making daily commutes easier for residents across the city.
The newly introduced metro trains, designed and manufactured entirely in India, incorporate advanced communication-based train control (CBTC) technology to ensure safe, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation. With this launch, Alstom further strengthens its support for the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiatives.
Key Features of the Expansion
Under this ambitious project, Alstom is delivering a total of 201 metro cars, assembled into 67 three-car trainsets, along with a cutting-edge signaling system for the Agra-Kanpur metro corridor. The design and engineering of these trains were carried out at Alstom’s Hyderabad facility, while the advanced signaling solutions were developed in partnership with teams in Gurugram, India, and Bangkok, Thailand. The trainsets are manufactured at Alstom’s state-of-the-art plant in Savli, Gujarat, underscoring the company’s dedication to India’s industrial growth.
The project’s first trainset was handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in Kanpur in September 2021. Since then, Alstom has delivered 40 trains that are now in service on Kanpur’s metro lines. Each three-car trainset can carry up to 960 passengers, providing reliable and efficient transportation to meet the growing demand in the city.
Comfortable, Sustainable, and Modern Travel
The new Kanpur Metro trains offer a modern, energy-efficient alternative to traditional modes of transportation. They aim to serve Kanpur’s 4.5 million residents by making travel faster, cleaner, and more convenient. Beyond improving daily commutes, this metro expansion contributes to regional development by better connecting neighborhoods and boosting local economies.
Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Uttar Pradesh, the trains feature a contemporary look with vibrant design elements. Passengers can enjoy fully air-conditioned coaches equipped with automated sliding doors, ergonomic seating, ample standing space, and designated areas for those with reduced mobility. Modern passenger information systems provide real-time updates for a seamless travel experience.
Each train can reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour and is built with robust stainless steel car bodies for enhanced safety and durability. Alstom’s Flexx bogies and Mitrac propulsion systems boost energy efficiency, aided by regenerative braking that lowers operating costs. The advanced CBTC signaling system enables Automatic Train Operations (ATO), ensuring smooth, punctual, and safe journeys.
With over 30 years of expertise in CBTC technology, Alstom has implemented this advanced system on more than 190 metro lines in 32 countries, demonstrating its ability to handle the demands of modern urban transit.
Alstom’s Role in India’s Rail Revolution
As the only multinational company in India offering comprehensive mobility solutions, Alstom plays a crucial role in the country’s ongoing ‘Rail Revolution.’ Its presence spans six industrial sites and four engineering centers, catering to domestic projects and global markets. Alstom’s contributions include high-tech rolling stock, modern signaling solutions, and robust rail infrastructure services.
In alignment with India’s focus on local manufacturing and economic empowerment, Alstom continues to expand its network of Indian suppliers and manufacturing capabilities, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and economic progress.
A Major Step for Kanpur’s Urban Mobility
The addition of five underground stations marks a significant milestone in Kanpur’s transformation into a modern, sustainable city. By connecting vital areas more efficiently, this extension encourages the use of public transit, reduces traffic congestion, and cuts down carbon emissions.
Alstom’s partnership with Indian authorities highlights its dedication to delivering advanced mobility solutions tailored to India’s needs. The Kanpur Metro expansion is a prime example of blending global technological expertise with local manufacturing excellence — a model for future urban transit projects in India.
Looking Ahead
As Alstom continues to collaborate with UPMRC and local partners, the city’s residents can look forward to even better metro connectivity and sustainable urban development. The successful launch of this extension paves the way for future projects that prioritize safety, reliability, and environmental stewardship — hallmarks of Alstom’s mission in India.
