This season, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort invites guests to embark on a sensory journey with the introduction of Whispers of the East, an exclusive afternoon tea experience crafted in collaboration between Executive Chef Natruthai Petsuwan and Chef Pongsakorn Jiarasatit, a third-generation culinary expert from the Michelin-Plated Jia Tong Heng. Available daily from June 1 to October 31, 2025, between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm, this unique experience takes place at The Verandah in the historic 1921 House.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Mae Ping River and the charming verandah of the former British Consulate, afternoon tea at Anantara Chiang Mai has become a cherished tradition. Every season brings a fresh twist to this iconic British ritual, incorporating tropical flavors and local influences. This summer, Whispers of the East introduces a refined Teochew-inspired approach, celebrating Chiang Mai’s rich Chinese culinary heritage.
Chef Pongsakorn of Jia Tong Heng, renowned for its authentic Chinese cuisine, teams up with Chef Natruthai to reimagine beloved family recipes, turning them into a thoughtfully curated tea-time experience that blends the old with the new.
As one of Chiang Mai’s most iconic and cherished Chinese restaurants, the Michelin-Plated Jia Tong Heng has long been a symbol of celebration. With nearly 70 years of history, it has grown from its humble beginnings in Nawarat Market to its flagship Si Don Chai location and expanded through new-generation outposts in Fa Ham, Nimman, and Mae Rim. The restaurant has been central to family gatherings, festive banquets, and multigenerational celebrations within the community.
In an exciting and unique collaboration, the Jia Tong Heng family’s treasured recipes have been reimagined into an exquisite afternoon tea experience, infused with a modern Teochew twist. Guests will indulge in dim sum-inspired savouries, such as steamed buns filled with rich, slow-braised Moo Hong pork. Sweet treats include ow nee pae kuay cake, made from Chef Pongsakorn’s grandmother’s original recipe, alongside an elegant Chinese red date Mont Blanc. The classic scones are paired with clotted cream and preserves, complemented by refreshing house-made tropical gelato and sorbet — a signature cooling feature of the resort’s afternoon tea offerings.
Presented on vintage blue-and-white porcelain, reserved for special occasions, every bite is carefully paired with fine teas and coffees. The beverage selection includes sustainably sourced blends from TWG and local Chiang Mai roaster Monsoon Tea, with popular choices like Tha Pae Gate and Mountain Breeze Oolong.
“Anantara takes great pride in celebrating each destination’s cultural richness, especially through cuisine,” says Executive Chef Natruthai Petsuwan. “Jia Tong Heng is just down the road, and it’s an honour to collaborate with such a local institution to craft something truly meaningful.”
“As a proud ambassador of Sino-Thai cuisine, it’s a privilege to reinterpret my ancestors’ recipes for Anantara’s guests,” adds Chef Pongsakorn Jiarasatit. “It’s a collaboration close to the heart — and hopefully the first of many.”
