First woman president of Ladakh hotel assn says priority is to protect tourism for local communities

Rigzin Wangmo Lachic, a first generation hotelier, owner of Dolkhar Ladakh, who was recently elected as the first woman president of All Ladakh Hotel & Guest House Association (ALHAGHA) has clarity in her vision on how to driving tourism in the eco-sensitive and fragile region of the Himalayas is concerned.

She doesn’t buy the argument that Ladakh is facing an problem of overtourism as is sometimes portrayed, but sees the current challenges to be the result of concentration of tourism over a limited period of the summer months in a small area with a few listed activities.

“We received only 3.6 lakh tourists this year compared to 5 lakh last year. It cannot be called overtourism. What we are required to do is to destress a few destinations by decentralising tourism and make people explore destinations beyond the top 5 or 10 activities listed in the google,” said Lachic, speaking exclusively to
