China’s envoy to India has said that the resumption of direct flights between Kolkata and Kunming could help support steadier progress in relations between the two countries.
The proposed air link is seen as a practical step toward improving people‑to‑people contact, business exchanges, and tourism. Direct flights would make travel easier and reduce dependence on indirect routes through other hubs.
Kolkata and Kunming have historically shared trade and cultural connections, and aviation links are viewed as an important tool for rebuilding engagement. Restoring the route would also benefit travellers from eastern India and southwest China.
Flight services between the two countries were affected by broader diplomatic and operational challenges in recent years. Discussions around resuming routes suggest a gradual effort to normalise connectivity.
While no timeline has been confirmed, the comments highlight how air travel continues to play a role in diplomatic and economic engagement between neighbouring countries.
