June 18, 2025: IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the world's leading hotel companies, has announced a major expansion across the African continent. The group plans to open 35 new hotels, adding over 6,500 rooms across key markets within the next few years.

This bold move strengthens IHG’s presence in Africa and demonstrates growing investor confidence in the region’s tourism and hospitality sectors. The new developments will include a mix of IHG’s well-known brands such as InterContinental, Holiday Inn, and Crowne Plaza, strategically located in countries like Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco, Kenya, and South Africa.

Haitham Mattar, Managing Director – India, Middle East, and Africa for IHG, said,

“Africa holds immense potential. With increasing urbanization, a young population, and strong travel demand, we are committed to supporting long-term hospitality growth across the continent.”

IHG currently operates 30+ hotels in Africa, and this announcement comes as part of their broader strategy to double their portfolio in emerging markets. The company is also focusing on sustainable and community-driven tourism to create long-term value in the regions they enter.

Industry experts believe this expansion will create thousands of jobs and boost tourism infrastructure, bringing international standards of hospitality to more African cities.
