Air India has marked a major milestone in its international expansion by resuming nonstop flights between Delhi and Shanghai for the first time in nearly six years while also introducing its newly configured Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner on scheduled service to Frankfurt.

Effective 1 February 2026, Air India’s direct Delhi–Shanghai (PVG) service restarted after an extended suspension that began in early 2020. The reinstated link is operated four times weekly with a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner, featuring 18 flat beds in Business Class and 238 seats in Economy. The move restores a vital air corridor between India’s capital and one of China’s most important economic hubs, reflecting improved bilateral air access.

The restoration of this route follows diplomatic efforts that helped reopen air links between the two countries. It also supports growing demand for business, trade, tourism, education and healthcare travel, helping reconnect travellers after years of limited direct connectivity. Delhi–Shanghai has become the 48th international destination served by the Air India Group.

Simultaneously, Air India placed its first customized Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner** into commercial service, deploying the aircraft on long‑haul flights between **Mumbai and Frankfurt (FRA). The aircraft, featuring bespoke cabin interiors designed specifically for Air India, introduces a new premium experience across all classes. The configuration includes 30 Business Class suites in a 1‑2‑1 layout with direct aisle access, 28 Premium Economy seats with enhanced comfort, and 238 ergonomic Economy seats — all equipped with high‑resolution entertainment and modern amenities.

Air India’s refreshed widebody product underscores its broader fleet modernization strategy, which aims to standardise cabins across its long‑haul network and elevate the overall passenger experience. The enhanced 787‑9 Dreamliner will gradually become a staple across key international routes, aligning with the airline’s ambitions to strengthen its global footprint.

Industry analysts say the simultaneous launch of an upgraded aircraft product and restoration of a key Asian route highlights Air India’s dual focus on fleet renewal and network expansion. As international travel recovers and demand patterns evolve, these developments are expected to position the airline competitively on high‑yield long‑haul sectors.
