Courtyard by Marriott Bengaluru Hebbal has brought in SK Jahid Akhtar as its new Pastry Chef. Akhtar comes with 13 years of pastry and bakery experience spread across some well-known luxury hotel names in India and a stint in Saudi Arabia.

Akhtar Takes Charge of Pastry at Courtyard Bengaluru Hebbal

He moves to Bengaluru from Novotel Kolkata Hotel and Residences, where he was Pastry Chef. At Courtyard by Marriott Bengaluru Hebbal, he will oversee the pastry and bakery section, work on the dessert menu and help build up the team working under him.

SK Jahid Akhtar's Experience

Before Kolkata, Akhtar spent time at ITC Maurya New Delhi and The Leela Ambience Gurugram as Sous Chef. He was Junior Sous Chef at The Westin Mumbai Garden City and Junior Sous Chef Pastry at Conrad Hilton Pune. Earlier in his career he worked as Demi Chef de Partie at JW Marriott Pune, was part of the team at Fariyas Resort Lonavla and started out at Hotel V.W. Canyon Raipur.

He also worked at Olivia Restaurant & French Patisserie in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and has done independent pastry work in Bhubaneswar on the side.

That is a fairly long list of different kitchens — from standalone city business hotels to resort properties and an international posting — and each one runs its own way. Picking up how different teams and brand standards operate is something that takes time, and Akhtar has had 13 years of exactly that.

SK Jahid Akhtar's Education

Akhtar studied hotel management at Biju Pattnaik College of Hotel Management and Tourism in Bhubaneswar and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Utkal University, Odisha.

He works with both classical pastry methods and newer plating and flavour ideas, and is known for keeping the kitchen atmosphere collaborative rather than hierarchical. That approach matters when you are also responsible for training junior staff, which is part of his brief at Hebbal.
