Seaplanes are once again drawing attention in India’s aviation policy discussions after earlier attempts to introduce services faced operational and commercial challenges.
Previous seaplane initiatives struggled due to regulatory hurdles, infrastructure limitations, and cost concerns. However, policymakers are now revisiting the concept as part of broader efforts to enhance regional connectivity, particularly to remote and tourist-friendly destinations.
Seaplanes offer the advantage of operating from water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and coastal areas, reducing the need for full-scale airport infrastructure. This makes them suitable for linking areas where building traditional airports may not be feasible.
The renewed focus aligns with India’s push to expand last-mile air connectivity under regional development programs. Authorities are examining regulatory clarity, safety frameworks, and viability models to ensure smoother implementation this time.
