Air India Selects Panasonic for IFE Support Across 74 Aircraft
Air India has selected Panasonic Avionics’ Total Care Package to maintain in-flight entertainment systems across 74 aircraft as part of its fleet modernization strategy.
Panasonic has selected Air india to provide end-to-end maintenance for in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems across 74 aircraft, covering both widebody and narrowbody fleets as part of its ongoing modernization programme.
The agreement will see Panasonic Technical Services (PTS) deliver its Total Care Package across multiple aircraft types, including Boeing 787-9, Airbus A350-1000, A350-900, and A321neo aircraft, reinforcing Air India’s push to enhance passenger experience and operational reliability.
Fleet Coverage and Aircraft Types
The maintenance programme spans 74 aircraft equipped with Panasonic Avionics’ IFE systems, covering a mix of long-haul and short-haul platforms. The aircraft included in the agreement are Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, Airbus A350-1000 and A350-900 widebody jets, and Airbus A321neo narrowbody aircraft.
These aircraft form a core part of Air India’s expanding and modernising fleet, which has been undergoing significant upgrades as the airline restructures its operations and product offering. The inclusion of both linefit and retrofit installations ensures coverage across newly delivered aircraft as well as existing fleet assets.
The IFE systems covered under the agreement include Panasonic’s Astrova and X Series platforms, which are deployed across various cabin configurations to support passenger entertainment and connectivity services.
Maintenance Scope and Technical Support
Under the Total Care Package, Panasonic Technical Services will provide comprehensive lifecycle support for Air India’s IFE systems. This includes proactive system monitoring, spares management, global field engineering support, and round-the-clock technical assistance.
The maintenance model is designed to reduce operational downtime and improve system reliability, enabling the airline to maintain consistent service quality across its fleet. By centralising support under a single provider, the agreement also aims to ensure predictable maintenance costs and streamlined operations.
According to the Vice President at Panasonic Technical Services, the partnership builds on an existing relationship and supports Air India’s broader transformation strategy, with a focus on delivering enhanced passenger experience through reliable onboard systems.
India-Based Operational Expansion
As part of the agreement, Panasonic Avionics will expand its operational footprint in India by establishing two new line maintenance stations in Mumbai and New Delhi. These facilities are intended to support real-time maintenance and improve responsiveness to technical issues affecting IFE systems.
The new stations will enable direct integration of fleet monitoring data with on-ground maintenance operations, allowing for faster diagnostics and repairs. This localized support infrastructure is expected to enhance aircraft availability and reduce delays associated with system faults.
Senior Vice President – Engineering & Maintenance at Air India, highlighted that the additional infrastructure will strengthen the airline’s engineering capabilities and minimize disruptions linked to in-flight entertainment systems.
Operational Impact and Passenger Experience
The agreement is aligned with Air India’s broader fleet renewal and modernization strategy, which prioritizes improved passenger experience alongside operational efficiency. Reliable IFE systems are a key component of long-haul and premium travel offerings, particularly on widebody aircraft.
By implementing proactive monitoring and continuous technical support, the airline aims to minimize service interruptions and ensure consistent performance across its network. The integration of advanced IFE platforms such as Astrova also supports enhanced content delivery and passenger engagement.
The partnership reflects a growing trend among airlines to outsource specialized maintenance functions to OEM-linked service providers, enabling greater efficiency and access to global technical expertise.
Industry Context and Current Status
The agreement underscores Panasonic Avionics’ position as a key supplier of in-flight entertainment systems and support services to major global airlines. As carriers invest in product upgrades and digital cabin experiences, demand for integrated maintenance solutions continues to rise.
For Air India, the deal represents another step in its transformation efforts, which include fleet expansion, cabin refurbishment, and service improvements. The airline continues to invest in both hardware and support infrastructure to align with international standards and passenger expectations.
The Total Care Package is now set to be implemented across the designated aircraft, with Panasonic Avionics expanding its presence in India to support ongoing and future fleet requirements. The agreement remains active as both companies progress with deployment and operational integration.
