Luxury hotels and resorts are booming in Nepal’s Rupandehi district, with new water parks and banquet halls despite border delays and slow airport operations.

Bhairahawa, Nepal – June 22, 2025: Despite challenges at the Belahiya border and limited activity at the Gautam Buddha International Airport, Nepal’s Rupandehi district is witnessing a surprising boom in luxury and boutique hotel development. Investors are betting big on the region’s potential as a major tourism hub—especially for religious travel to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.
Over the past year, Rupandehi has seen a rapid expansion in hospitality infrastructure. Newly built high-end hotels, resorts, and event venues are transforming both urban and rural landscapes.

A significant increase in 4-star and 5-star hotels across Bhairahawa, Butwal, and nearby municipalities
Development of resorts along riverbanks and lakes, catering to domestic tourists seeking nature and peace

While the Belahiya checkpoint continues to face long clearance times and the airport has yet to reach full operational capacity, local entrepreneurs remain optimistic. They believe the upcoming full activation of international flights and improved cross-border connectivity with India will further boost demand.
Local hoteliers have also started modernizing older properties by adding swimming pools, rooftop dining, and wellness amenities to compete with newer players entering the market.
“This is a long-term game. Once Lumbini becomes a full-scale international destination, we’ll be ready,” said one Bhairahawa hotel owner.
