JAG Hotel Luxury Audio Experience Unveiled in St. John's
The JAG Hotel luxury audio experience blends Genelec Smart IP loudspeakers with refined interiors, placing music at the heart of every guest stay.
A single note settles over the Mojo Lounge before the conversation does, drifting from a wall mounted loudspeaker angled just above eye level, tuned so precisely that it feels less like background music and more like part of the room itself. Guests on the eighth floor of downtown St. John's rarely notice the source at first. They notice the feeling instead, the sense that the space around them has been composed with the same care as a cocktail menu or a lighting plan. That feeling is the entire premise behind the JAG Hotel luxury audio experience, a project built not around square footage or thread count, but around sound.
Owner John Steele's passion for music sits at the centre of that vision. Daily playlists at JAG Hotel St. John's are personally curated by Steele himself, an unusual level of hands on involvement for a hotelier, and one that signals audio quality is treated as a core value rather than a decorative afterthought. Staff describe the atmosphere it creates as something closer to a listening room than a lobby, style and comfort arriving through speakers as much as through furnishings.
Building on the Mojo Lounge's Debut
Following the unveiling of the lavish Mojo Lounge on the eighth floor last year, Steele Hotels set out to find a premium audio system capable of extending that same sonic identity across the bar, office level and penthouse suite. The goal was not simply background music piped through standard speakers. It was a fully integrated sound environment where music became structural to the guest experience rather than incidental to it.
Genelec's Smart IP loudspeakers were ultimately chosen to define that sonic signature, prized among audiophiles for their clarity and control. AV distribution and integration specialist SFM was commissioned to work alongside the hotel's in house installation team on product selection and system programming, a partnership that would need to solve both technical and aesthetic challenges at once.
Why Distance Became the First Design Problem
The Mojo Lounge, office floor and penthouse occupy the building's top three levels, positioned furthest from the second floor AV control room. That physical distance created an immediate engineering hurdle, since delivering consistent, high fidelity sound across such a span typically demands significant cabling infrastructure. Jodi Rhuland, Regional Sales Manager at SFM, said visitors have come to expect care and quality in the way sound shapes their stay at JAG Hotel, a standard that left little room for compromise on the upper floors. Despite the distance, Rhuland explained it was critical that these upper audio zones offered the same premium sonic performance as the rest of the building, particularly inside the newly opened Mojo Lounge.
Aesthetics carried equal weight in the brief. Rhuland described the Mojo Lounge as designed to reflect the hotel's commitment to luxury, meaning any installed loudspeakers could not disrupt its visual identity. Instead, they needed to become part of the environment itself, functioning as a deliberate design feature rather than a purely functional necessity, all within a tight delivery window that left little margin for error.
A PoE Solution for a Luxury Hotel Audio System
Given the distance between the AV control system and the Mojo Lounge, Rhuland said the team recognised early on that a Power over Ethernet solution would allow them to deliver a reliable loudspeaker network to the hotel's top floors without adding unnecessary infrastructure, disruption or visual clutter. That realisation shaped the entire technical direction of the project, steering the team toward SFM's Professional Services division, led by Evan Nearing, which ultimately specified Genelec's Smart IP range to meet the brief.
Rhuland pointed to Genelec's reputation in both the luxury hospitality sector and the wider music industry as a deciding factor, citing its studio quality performance and clarity. She added that JAG Hotel places music at the forefront of the guest experience, and that Genelec's audio philosophy aligned closely with Steele Hotels' broader vision. On top of the sonic fit, she noted that the active PoE solution within the Smart IP series solved exactly the architectural and logistical challenges the project faced.
Seventy One Loudspeakers Across Three Zones
In total, JAG Hotel's technical team installed 71 Genelec Smart IP loudspeakers across the three upper zones. Fifty Genelec 4435 in ceiling speakers were placed for discreet, consistent coverage throughout the spaces, while twenty one Genelec 4430 loudspeakers, the largest model in the Smart IP family, were surface mounted in the Mojo Lounge on adjustable brackets.
Rather than concealing these larger units, the design team made a conscious choice to showcase them. Rhuland said it was intentional that the loudspeakers were not hidden away, since they now serve as a prominent feature of the lounge, matching the hotel's aesthetic and values while elevating the space through design as well as pure function.
What the Finished Space Reveals About Premium Hospitality Audio
Since opening, the Mojo Lounge, penthouse and offices have drawn consistent praise from guests, many of whom notice the sound quality before they can quite articulate why the room feels different. Rhuland said the goal of the project was to create a genuine listening experience rather than merely a background audio solution, one that would stand out particularly to guests arriving from the music industry itself.
That distinction matters beyond a single property in St. John's. As more premium hospitality audio projects move away from generic ceiling speakers toward considered, high fidelity systems, hotels are increasingly treating sound as a defining part of brand identity rather than a utility. Rhuland framed the JAG Hotel project as a strong example of that shift, noting that Genelec's involvement demonstrated how professional audio can shape a hotel's identity, not simply support it in the background. Full technical details on the Smart IP series are available on the official Genelec website.
A Sound Worth Returning For
Hospitality projects rarely announce themselves through what guests hear rather than what they see, yet that is precisely what distinguishes the hotel music experience now defining JAG Hotel's upper floors. Repositioning speakers as design objects, rather than hidden infrastructure, reflects a broader industry recognition that atmosphere is engineered as deliberately as it is decorated, a principle that extends well beyond audio into how hospitality spaces of every kind are reimagined and repurposed, as seen in recent coverage of how former hospitality buildings across the West Midlands are being considered for entirely new community uses.
Long after the last note fades from the Mojo Lounge each evening, the loudspeakers remain visible against the room's careful design, a quiet reminder that luxury, in this case, was never only about what a guest could see. It was about what they could hear, note by note, floor by floor, in a hotel built around the conviction that sound deserves the same craftsmanship as everything else.
