PARIS, May 21, 2026 — French chef Guy Savoy became the first cook in the 210-year history of the Académie des Beaux-Arts to be inducted as a member on May 20, 2026, when he took his seat under the dome of the Palais de l'Institut de France in Paris, officially placing gastronomy alongside painting, sculpture, music and architecture as a recognised art form in France's most prestigious cultural institution.

The induction marks a turning point not just for Savoy personally but for the entire culinary profession, a formal acknowledgement, from one of Europe's oldest and most guarded cultural bodies, that the work done in a professional kitchen carries the same creative weight as what happens in a studio, a concert hall or an atelier.

Guy Savoy Takes Chair V at the Académie des Beaux-Arts

Savoy was elected to chair V of the Académie's section des membres libres, the free members' section, previously occupied by Michel David-Weill, the investment banker, museum patron and philanthropist who died in 2022. The section was created to allow the Académie to bring in figures whose work spans or transcends established disciplines.

During the induction ceremony, Savoy wore the traditional Habit Vert, the embroidered green coat worn by all members of the Institut de France academies, and received his academician's sword from fellow academician Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière. The ceremony took place before the full assembly of Académie members gathered beneath the institution's historic dome.

Permanent Secretary Cites Savoy's Role in UNESCO Heritage Recognition

Laurent Petitgirard, permanent secretary of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, marked the occasion by describing Savoy as not only one of the most prominent figures in French gastronomy but also a humanist and a committed advocate for contemporary art. Petitgirard pointed specifically to Savoy's efforts to have the repas gastronomique des Français, the French gastronomic meal, added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, which it achieved in 2010.

Petitgirard said the election demonstrated that Savoy contributes to the international influence of France in a way that makes his membership entirely consistent with the Académie's mission and values.

Savoy Speaks for a Profession, Not Just Himself

In his address to the assembled members, Savoy chose words that framed the moment as a collective recognition rather than a personal one. He described himself as a craftsman who, through the act of his election, had perhaps become an artist, and said he brought with him all the men and women who work in the service of gastronomy, the French countryside, the art of the table, sommellerie, hospitality and the broader French art of living.

The speech placed Savoy's own career within a much wider picture of the people and trades that make French food culture function, from the farmers and producers to the sommeliers and the service professionals who rarely receive formal cultural recognition of this kind.

A Career Built From Scratch, Then Rebuilt After Setback

Savoy, born on July 24, 1953, in Nevers and raised in Bourgoin-Jallieu in the Isère region, opened his first Paris restaurant on rue Duret in the 16th arrondissement in 1980. The kitchen earned its first Michelin star in 1981, a second in 1985 and a third in 2000, holding all three until 2023. As of the 2025 Michelin Guide, the restaurant at Monnaie de Paris holds two stars.

The loss of a third star in 2023 made his ascent to the Académie in 2026 all the more pointed, what the New York Times described as a form of beautiful revenge for a chef who had faced a public professional setback and responded by reaching an even higher level of cultural recognition.

La Liste has named Restaurant Guy Savoy the best restaurant in the world for nine consecutive years. His Las Vegas outpost at Caesars Palace holds the Forbes Five-Star Award for the 14th consecutive year in 2026 and ranks as the highest-placed Las Vegas restaurant on La Liste's 2026 global top 1,000 list.

Gastronomy Now Sits Alongside Painting and Music at the Institut de France

By joining the section des membres libres, gastronomy formally takes its place within the Académie des Beaux-Arts alongside the disciplines of painting, sculpture, architecture, engraving and drawing, musical composition, stage direction, photography and choreography. The Académie des Beaux-Arts is one of the five academies of the Institut de France, founded in 1816.

The Gault&Millau guide, which awards Savoy's Paris restaurant the maximum five toques, described the election as a recognition not only of one chef but of an entire profession. For the culinary world, the symbolic weight of the moment is considerable — a kitchen has now, for the first time, been granted the same institutional standing as a canvas.
