DEREHAM, England, June 16, 2026 — The Golden Bamboo Chinese restaurant will open in Dereham on Wednesday, June 17, the business has confirmed. It occupies the former Ward Gethin Archer solicitors office in the town's Market Place.

The opening adds another Chinese restaurant to the Norfolk market town and brings a long-vacant town-centre building back into use. The venue announced its opening date on social media, saying it would offer freshly prepared dishes in a friendly setting.

Golden Bamboo Chinese restaurant readies for opening day

Signs and decorations went up outside the Market Place premises in the weeks before the launch as the restaurant prepared to welcome customers. The business had earlier aimed for an early June opening while it completed final equipment testing.

Once trading, the restaurant is expected to employ four people full time and four part time.

From rejected housing plans to a restaurant

Breckland Council approved the restaurant last year after owner Weidong Xu twice failed to win permission to convert the property at 25 Market Place into a six-bedroom house. The first housing scheme was refused over planning concerns and the second over environmental conditions.

The restaurant plans drew objections about potential odour and noise, and the council attached conditions including restricted opening hours and a review of the building's air extraction system.

Joining Dereham's dining scene

Golden Bamboo joins other Chinese restaurants and takeaways in the town, including Mr Tang on High Street and Rising Noodle in Market Place. The town centre has several established Chinese venues serving residents.

The restaurant said it looked forward to welcoming guests and serving the local community as it opens its doors.
