PANAJI, June 10, 2026 — Twenty-eight Kerala tourists suffered suspected food poisoning during a visit to Goa and were treated at South Goa District Hospital after falling ill late Tuesday, health officials confirmed Wednesday.
The group began experiencing vomiting, abdominal discomfort and nausea after eating at a restaurant in Old Goa, according to South Goa District Hospital Superintendent Dr. Rajendra Borkar, who spoke with reporters on Wednesday.
Officials say most patients stable after treatment
Medical staff treated all 28 tourists on Tuesday night. Most were discharged once their condition improved, while the hospital advised three patients to remain for further observation. Those individuals later chose to leave against medical advice despite recommendations to stay.
"The majority displayed stable vitals on arrival, and we provided supportive care as needed," Dr. Rajendra Borkar said, confirming that no life-threatening complications were reported.
Authorities begin food safety inquiries
Health officials have started preliminary inquiries to determine whether contaminated food caused the suspected poisoning. The source of the illness has not been officially confirmed, and authorities warn that investigation results may take time.
Local tourism businesses and health departments are working together to monitor the situation and reassure visitors. Tourism operators emphasize the importance of hygiene and safe food practices in areas popular with travellers.
Medical support for affected travellers
Hospital staff advised the group to maintain hydration and report any lingering symptoms to medical professionals. Officials urge anyone who experiences food-related illness to seek prompt medical care, particularly when travelling.
