KARBALA, Iraq, May 30, 2026 — The Host Restaurant Department at the al-Abbas's Holy Shrine in the holy city of Karbala distributed 15,000 meals to visitors arriving to perform Ziyarat at the shrines of Imam al-Hussayn and his brother Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas, according to a report by the AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA24).
The distribution represents a continued and structured expansion of the shrine's food service operations, which have grown significantly in scale over recent years and now cover multiple outlets across the holy city during both regular visitation periods and peak Islamic commemorations.

The assistant head of the Host Department confirmed the meal count and described the department's operational approach. Staff work according to an organized preparation and distribution system, with full adherence to approved health standards at all service points.
Officials stated the effort forms part of the department's broader service plan, which aims to meet the needs of the large numbers of pilgrims who travel to Karbala throughout the year. The department serves visitors to both the shrine of Imam al-Hussayn and the shrine of Aba al-Fadl al-Abbas, which stand 378 meters apart in the heart of the old city, in the area known as Bayn al-Haramayn.
The Host Department operates meal distribution points across multiple locations in Karbala, including outlets on Bab al-Qibla Street, Al-Hawra Street, the gate of Imam al-Jawad, the Imam al-Hadi hospitality complex, the Imam al-Askari complex, the host warehouse site on Maytham al-Tammar Street, the Imam Ali Street outlet and the Al-Alawi market outlet.
Consistent Growth in Meal Provision Across Ziyarat Seasons
The al-Abbas Shrine's food service operation has expanded steadily over the past several years. On standard non-event days, the department has provided approximately 4,000 lunch meals daily through its network of outlets and the main restaurant inside the shrine, which seats up to 300 visitors across separate halls for men and women.
During high-traffic religious occasions, the department scales output significantly. On Thursday nights, when large numbers of pilgrims traditionally travel to Karbala, the department has confirmed distributions of 10,000 meals per service. The same volume was provided on the first Thursday of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah in 2026, when pilgrims gathered at the shrine ahead of the Hajj season.
At its largest scale, during the Arbaeen of Imam al-Hussayn, one of the world's largest annual pilgrimages, the department provided more than 7.39 million meals over the course of the commemoration period in 2025, operating across three main meal periods daily with additional intermediate distributions of fruit, juice and water. Volunteers supported professional staff throughout those operations.
Service Mission Rooted in Shrine's Broader Hospitality Mandate
The al-Abbas's Holy Shrine administers its food service operations through the Host Restaurant Department as one component of a wider visitor services structure. The shrine's departments also cover courtyard care, religious affairs, medical services and cultural programming, all oriented toward ensuring pilgrims can perform their Ziyarat, the act of visiting the shrines for religious observance, with comfort and adequate support.
The shrine's humanitarian reach extends beyond Karbala. Earlier in 2026, the al-Abbas's Holy Shrine operated a central kitchen in Lebanon following the ceasefire, providing two daily meals to between 4,000 and 5,000 displaced individuals in response to a call from the Supreme Religious Authority to support affected populations.
