CHICAGO, June 18, 2026 — Soul Ramen, a restaurant fusing soul food with ramen, is preparing to open in the Bronzeville neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. Founder Airian McDuffy, a real estate agent and entrepreneur, created the concept.
The restaurant pairs traditional ramen techniques with what McDuffy calls Afro-inspired flavors, and she plans it as a gathering place as much as an eatery. Soul Ramen describes itself as the first Black woman-owned ramen shop in Chicago and the Midwest.
The opening adds a fusion concept to a historic South Side neighborhood, giving local diners a sit-down ramen option without leaving the area.
Soul Ramen brings a fusion concept to Bronzeville
Soul Ramen is located at 508 E. Pershing Road, near South Rhodes Avenue, on the north side of Bronzeville. The restaurant says it is designed as a hub for food, fashion and art that reflects the neighborhood.
McDuffy said she chose the location for its history, noting that Bronzeville "has been known for revolution and Black enterprises." The neighborhood was a center of Black business and culture in the early 20th century.
From real estate to ramen
McDuffy, a realtor by trade, developed the soul-food-and-ramen concept as a way to follow a food passion and create a space for local professionals. She has compared her vision to a members' club for South Side creatives, so they need not travel to the West Loop to network.
The restaurant is intended to serve Millennial and Gen Z working professionals, McDuffy said.
A city grant and a long build-out
Soul Ramen says it is a grant recipient under the City of Chicago's Chicago Recovery Plan, administered by the Department of Planning and Development. The project broke ground in November 2024, and the interior, including a bar, was taking shape by early 2026.
The restaurant had not announced a firm opening date as of mid-June 2026 and directs prospective diners to its social media for updates.
