IHCL signs a 70-key Gateway hotel in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, expanding its North East portfolio to 21 hotels, including 12 under development.
Dirang, April 2026: Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has announced the signing of a 70-key Gateway hotel in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, marking a greenfield development and taking its total portfolio in India’s North East region to 21 properties, including 12 currently under development.
The new project strengthens IHCL’s presence in emerging tourism destinations, with Dirang gaining attention due to improved connectivity and its growing appeal among leisure and adventure travellers. The development reflects the company’s continued focus on expanding into high-potential, underpenetrated markets.
70-Key Gateway Hotel Planned as Greenfield Development
The upcoming Gateway Dirang will feature 70 rooms and a full range of hospitality facilities designed to cater to both leisure and business travellers. Planned amenities include an all-day dining restaurant, a speciality restaurant, and a bar, alongside a banquet hall and dedicated meeting spaces.
The property will also include recreational infrastructure such as a swimming pool, fitness centre, and spa, positioning it as a full-service offering within the region. The hotel is being developed as a greenfield project, indicating a new-build approach aligned with IHCL’s expansion strategy.
The Gateway brand, positioned in the upscale segment, is expected to cater to travellers seeking comfort-driven stays with regional character, particularly in destinations witnessing rising tourist inflows.
Strategic Location Strengthens Tourism Circuit
Dirang, located in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district, is emerging as a key stopover destination for travellers heading to Tawang, one of the region’s most visited tourist hubs. Its positioning along this route enhances its strategic importance within the state’s tourism circuit.
The area is known for its scenic landscape, including apple orchards, terraced farms, and pine-covered hills, as well as natural hot water springs that attract visitors year-round. These factors have contributed to increasing interest from both domestic tourists and niche travel segments such as adventure and nature tourism.
Improved accessibility and infrastructure development in the region have further supported this growth, making destinations like Dirang more viable for branded hospitality investments.
Partnership with Local Stakeholder
The project is being developed in partnership with local entrepreneur Phurpa Tsering, highlighting IHCL’s approach of collaborating with regional stakeholders to drive growth in emerging markets. The partnership is expected to combine local insights with IHCL’s operational expertise.
According to the company, the collaboration aims to support sustainable tourism development while contributing to the local economy through employment generation and improved hospitality infrastructure.
The involvement of local partners is a key component of IHCL’s expansion strategy, particularly in regions where destination development is still evolving.
North East Portfolio Reaches 21 Hotels
With the addition of Gateway Dirang, IHCL’s portfolio in the North East region has grown to 21 hotels. Of these, 12 properties are currently under development, indicating a strong pipeline and long-term commitment to the region.
The North East has been identified as a priority market for the company, driven by increasing government focus on infrastructure, improved connectivity, and rising tourism demand. IHCL’s presence across multiple states in the region reflects a diversified approach to capturing growth across different micro-markets.
The expansion aligns with broader industry trends where hotel operators are moving beyond established metropolitan and resort destinations to tap into emerging locations with untapped potential.
Focus on Emerging Destinations and Sustainable Growth
IHCL’s latest signing underscores its strategy of entering destinations that are in the early stages of tourism development but show strong long-term potential. By establishing an early presence, the company aims to build brand recognition and secure a competitive advantage as these markets mature.
The development of hospitality infrastructure in locations like Dirang is expected to play a role in supporting tourism growth by improving accommodation quality and capacity. At the same time, such projects contribute to the broader ecosystem by encouraging longer stays and higher visitor spending.
The company has indicated that its expansion approach will continue to focus on a mix of established and emerging markets, with an emphasis on sustainable growth and alignment with local tourism dynamics.
