Ladakh Launches First Commercial Rooftop Solar Project at Hotel Barath Leh to Boost Sustainable Tourism

Ladakh has marked a milestone in sustainable hospitality with the inauguration of its first commercial rooftop solar installation at Hotel Barath in Leh on April 7, 2026. The project signals a shift towards renewable energy adoption in the region’s tourism sector, aiming to reduce operational costs and promote environmentally responsible development.

First commercial solar installation in Ladakh’s hospitality sector

The rooftop solar system at Hotel Barath was inaugurated by Administrative Secretary of the Power Development Department and New & Renewable Energy, Rudra Goud P.T. The installation represents the first instance of a commercial hospitality establishment in Ladakh adopting rooftop solar technology at this scale.

Officials highlighted that the initiative is a step forward in aligning the Union Territory’s tourism-driven economy with broader clean energy objectives. The project is positioned as a model for other hotels and commercial establishments in the region.

Supports carbon-neutral and energy transition goals

The administration emphasised that such installations contribute directly to Ladakh’s long-term vision of becoming carbon-neutral. By integrating renewable energy into hotel operations, the initiative reduces dependence on conventional power sources while promoting sustainable infrastructure.

According to officials, rooftop solar systems not only support environmental goals but also offer economic advantages. Over time, these systems can significantly lower electricity expenses for hotel operators, improving financial sustainability alongside environmental performance.

Tourism sector identified as key driver

The tourism and hospitality sector, a major contributor to Ladakh’s economy, has been identified as a critical area for renewable energy adoption. Authorities noted that energy-efficient hotels can strengthen the region’s positioning as a sustainable travel destination, particularly among environmentally conscious travellers.

Solar-powered infrastructure is expected to help hotels manage energy consumption more efficiently while maintaining operational stability in a region where power supply can be constrained.

Financial viability and policy support highlighted

Officials underscored the financial feasibility of rooftop solar projects, noting that various loan facilities are available under MSME-linked schemes to support such investments. While direct subsidies may not be available in all cases, long-term savings and reduced energy costs make these systems commercially viable.

Chief Engineer of PDD Ladakh, Tsewang Paljor, stated that proposals for a broader solar policy have already been submitted for approval. He added that rooftop solar systems also contribute to improved voltage stability and reduce pressure on the conventional power grid.

Authorities indicated that several additional hotel projects are already in the pipeline for similar installations, suggesting growing interest in renewable energy adoption within the sector.

Industry stakeholders call for wider adoption

Industry representatives described the development as a significant achievement for Ladakh’s hospitality ecosystem. The President of the All Ladakh Hotel & Guest House Association Leh, Rigzin Wangmo Lachic, noted that the project is the result of sustained efforts over the past five years.

She emphasised that tourism remains a key economic pillar for Ladakh and that initiatives such as rooftop solar installations can help address challenges related to energy tariffs while supporting environmentally responsible growth.

The inauguration event was attended by government officials, representatives from hotel and trade associations, and industry stakeholders, including members from ALTOA, ALGHA, the Merchant Association, and private sector participants.

With the successful implementation of the first commercial rooftop solar project, Ladakh has taken a step towards integrating renewable energy into its hospitality infrastructure, setting a precedent for future developments in the region.
