Why the Mandarin Oriental Desaru Coast Michelin Key Matters

The MICHELIN Guide presents Keys as the hotel equivalent of its restaurant stars. They honour outstanding guest experiences. Inspectors look at architecture and design, service, personality, value and contribution to the destination. One Key signals a thoughtful and carefully curated stay.

The award also brings global attention to Desaru Coast. This coastal destination in Johor is where rainforest meets the South China Sea. It is easy to reach from Singapore and other parts of Malaysia.

Luxury Resorts in Desaru Coast: Suites and Setting

The resort sits within 128 acres of rainforest along an unspoilt shoreline. It is one of the final works of acclaimed architect Kerry Hill. There are 44 spacious suites, and each spans at least 105 square metres. Shaded verandas, private plunge pools and secluded courtyards overlook the rainforest or sea.

An exclusive four bedroom pool villa completes the offering. Every room has an expansive bathroom with a soaking tub and rainfall shower. A kids' club, wellness options and curated dining add to the stay.

Mandarin Oriental Desaru Coast Michelin Key and New Leadership

Fiona Hagan has led the resort since May 2026. She is an Australian with three decades of leadership experience in luxury hotels across Asia Pacific. Fiona joined from Shangri La Rasa Ria in Kota Kinabalu, where she was General Manager from 2017. Earlier, she held senior roles with Marriott International and Starwood Hotels and Resorts across Malaysia, China and Southeast Asia.

Fiona said the team is deeply honoured to receive its first MICHELIN Key. She said the recognition belongs to colleagues whose warmth and care shape every stay. She added that the coast, where ancient rainforest meets the South China Sea, makes the experience deeply rooted in its destination.

Lumare Beach House and Sports Club Opens in November

Lumare Beach House and Sports Club will open in November 2026. It will be Mandarin Oriental's first beach club in Southeast Asia. The concept takes its cue from relaxed Northern Mediterranean coastal living. Dining centres on elemental fire cooking and unhurried meals by the sea.

A beachfront pool sits at the heart of the club. A dedicated children's pool sits beside it. Padel, tennis and marine sports add an active side. Afternoons flow into lively evenings with music and guest DJ sets.

Fiona said Lumare gives guests another reason to spend more time at the resort. She described long lunches by the water, afternoons at the pool and evenings by the sea.

The Key and the Lumare launch mark a significant first year for the resort. For more hotel industry updates, read the latest hotel news from HCP.
