Lyle Lovett and Asleep at the Wheel opened the celebration, their sets carrying across a stretch of Texas limestone bluffs where, for now, construction fencing stands where an amphitheater will eventually rise. It was an unusual way to unveil a hotel, no ribbon cutting, no lobby tour, just musicians performing on land still being shaped into UMusic Hotel & Private Residences Austin, the first American property from Universal Music Group's hospitality arm.

Why Austin, and Why Now

Austin has spent decades earning its reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World, a title built on scattered studios, dive bars and festival stages rather than any single unifying venue. UMusic's project aims to consolidate some of that spirit into one address, anchored by the White Rocks Amphitheater, a 10,000 seat open air venue drawing deliberate inspiration from Colorado's Red Rocks and the Hollywood Bowl.

An Entirely New Build, Not a Conversion

UMusic's earlier Madrid property sits atop the historic Albeniz Theater, working within an existing structure. Austin takes a different path, built from the ground up across open Hill Country land rather than converted from something already standing. The five star resort will include 150 guest rooms alongside more than 600 private residences, a scale that positions it as a permanent community rather than a weekend destination alone.

What Happens When the Sun Goes Down, and When It Does Not

Given the Texas heat, White Rocks Entertainment has built substantial indoor programming alongside the outdoor amphitheater, including a more intimate performance venue, recording and content studios for visiting artists, a nightclub, a comedy club, and multiple restaurants. A spa and wellness center rounds out the offering, featuring a weight training room, steam room, sauna and salt bath, alongside a Las Vegas style beach club designed for daytime gathering when the amphitheater sits quiet.

Building for the Ground It Sits On

The scale of construction pushed UMusic toward explicit sustainability commitments. The project is designed to be the first large development in the city to meet Austin's full water reuse goal, paired with native landscape restoration and an energy saving microgrid, details that matter considerably given the ecological sensitivity of Hill Country terrain.

A Commitment Beyond the Property Line

White Rocks has also announced a permanent endowment supporting Austin's performing arts scene, alongside the White Rocks Collab, a downtown artist development venue offering career support and live performance space independent of the hotel itself.
