Golden Corral Restaurant Closures 2026 have drawn attention after the buffet chain confirmed it has closed at least six locations this year. The confirmation followed press reports from USA TODAY. The company said several of the sites will likely reopen under new franchise ownership. Ninety nine percent of its restaurants are franchisee owned.

Golden Corral Restaurant Closures 2026 and the Unit Count

Golden Corral has seen a modest decline in unit count since 2023. It had 362 locations that year and 348 restaurants at the end of 2025, according to its franchise disclosure document. Last year, the chain lost four net franchised locations.

The company said its current rate of attrition is higher than normal. It added that the reasons for closures vary and are specific to the individual franchise entities that operated the locations. It said it is committed to working with franchisees to transfer ownership to another franchise entity or to company operations.

New Restaurants and Growth Plans

The chain continues to open locations across the United States. These include Texas, Florida, Alabama and Puerto Rico. The company said six new restaurants are currently under development. It also said more development opportunities and growth initiatives are underway for 2027.

Buffet Demand and Industry Pressure

Buffets remain popular with price sensitive consumers. Yelp reported that searches for all you can eat buffet near me rose 252% from September 2024 to August 2025. Even so, Golden Corral faces some of the same challenges as many midscale and fine dining concepts. Datassential figures show consumers are seeking more convenient and faster options. This reflects wider US restaurant industry trends 2026 across the sector.

Smaller Prototypes and Value Deals

Golden Corral has been developing smaller prototypes with lower costs for operators. Its traditional unit measures 11,000 square feet. The chain now has an 8,500 square foot prototype and a 6,500 to 7,000 square foot version.

Last year it opened a fast casual concept called Golden Corral Favorites. The store did not perform as planned, because customers expected a full buffet experience. The concept closed earlier this year.

The chain is also leaning on value to drive guest frequency. This summer it launched its America $2.50 Value Deals as part of the celebration of America's 250th birthday. The offer includes a $2.50 Kids Weekend Breakfast Buffet, $2.50 beverages and $2.50 discounts on lunch and takeout orders. The promotions run through the end of this year.
