HYDERABAD, July 8, 2026 — Amaravati Restaurant in LB Nagar has been directed to pay Rs 25,000 after the Hyderabad District Consumer Commission found that it charged a customer more than the printed maximum retail price (MRP) for bottled drinking water. The order includes Rs 20,000 as compensation for mental agony and inconvenience and Rs 5,000 towards litigation costs.

The ruling reinforces consumer protection norms that prohibit businesses from collecting more than the printed MRP on packaged commodities sold to customers. The decision also highlights the responsibility of restaurants to follow pricing regulations while serving packaged products.

Hyderabad Amaravati Restaurant MRP Case

The dispute began after a customer visited Amaravati Restaurant in LB Nagar and purchased bottled drinking water during a meal. According to the complaint, the restaurant billed the customer at a price higher than the MRP printed on the bottles.

After examining the complaint and supporting documents, the Hyderabad District Consumer Commission concluded that charging above the printed MRP amounted to an unfair trade practice. The commission ordered the restaurant to compensate the complainant and reimburse litigation expenses.

Consumer Rights Receive Fresh Attention

Consumer protection experts note that packaged commodities carrying a printed MRP must generally be sold at or below that price unless a specific legal exemption applies. Customers who believe they have been overcharged can preserve the purchase bill and raise the issue with the appropriate consumer forum.

The latest order serves as a reminder for restaurants, hotels and other food service establishments to ensure billing practices comply with applicable consumer protection and legal metrology regulations.

What Businesses Should Do

Hospitality operators are expected to regularly review billing systems, train staff on pricing compliance and ensure packaged goods are sold in accordance with applicable laws. Industry observers say transparent pricing helps build customer trust while reducing the risk of legal disputes.

Consumers are also encouraged to verify invoices before making payments and report any discrepancies through the appropriate legal channels if they believe pricing rules have been violated.
