We’re bleeding time on re-cleans again. That’s not workload — that’s broken sequence. Fix the basics and the floor settles.

This is floor control. Not theory. What you do, step by step, room after room.

You follow SOP, rooms hold. You skip steps, problems show up after check-in.

Overview of Housekeeping Department

Housekeeping controls the room’s feel. Clean. Fresh. Set right.

Guests notice in seconds.

You move with front office, maintenance, laundry. Miss one update, the whole chain slows.

Structure:

Executive Housekeeper → Assistant Housekeeper → Floor Supervisors → Room Attendants → Public Area Attendants

Clear roles. No overlap.

Daily checks:

  • Room time
  • Inspection score
  • Guest feedback
  • Turnaround speed

12–16 rooms per shift. Busy days push higher. And that’s when shortcuts creep in.

Housekeeping SOP Framework

SOP keeps the floor steady. Without it, every room turns different.

Fixed order:

Preparation → Room entry → Cleaning → Replenishment → Final inspection

Break the order, and room friction starts.

Core SOP Principles:

- Top to bottom
- Clean to dirty
- Stop cross-contamination
- Stay within time
- Room leaves only when inspection-ready

Same flow. Every room. Every shift.

Room Cleaning SOP

This is your line. Don’t improvise.

Step 1: Pre-Shift Preparation
Pick up assignment sheet, master key, linen, amenities, cleaning supplies. Trolley fully stocked. No mid-room running.

Step 2: Entry Procedure
Knock three times. Say “Housekeeping.” Wait. Enter only when clear.

Step 3: Room Assessment
Lights on. Curtains open. Quick scan — damage, lost items, guest belongings.

Step 4: Removal of Soiled Items
Out with linen, towels, trash. Segregate waste properly.

Step 5: Bed Making
Strip bed. Check mattress. Fresh linen. Tight hospital corners.

Step 6: Dusting and Surface Cleaning
High to low. All surfaces. Corners included.

Step 7: Bathroom Cleaning
Apply cleaning chemicals. Scrub toilet, sink, shower area, tiles. Replace towels and toiletries.

Step 8: Floor Cleaning
Vacuum or mop. Move inside toward exit.

Step 9: Replenishment
Water bottles. Tea kits. Toiletries. Stationery.

Step 10: Final Setup
Set furniture. Adjust lighting. Set temperature. Final visual check.

Time:

  • Stayover: 20–30 min
  • Departure: 30–45 min

Rush early, fix later. That’s where time gets lost.

Guest Room Servicing Procedure

Check room status first. Always.

Stayover Rooms:
Light clean. Replace used items only. Don’t disturb guest setup.

Departure Rooms:
Deep-clean. Check drawers, shelves, corners. Reset fully.

Occupied Rooms:
Permission first. Work around guest comfort.

Sequence stays:

Bedroom first → Bathroom last

Stops contamination.

Supervisors assign rooms based on load. Speak early if overloaded — not after delays.

Cleaning Tools & Equipment

Right tool saves time. Wrong one creates rework.

Standard Equipment:

- Housekeeping trolley
- Vacuum cleaner
- Mop and bucket system
- Microfiber cloths (color-coded)
- Scrubbing brushes
- Glass cleaning tools

Cleaning Chemicals:

- All-purpose cleaner
- Disinfectant solution
- Glass cleaner
- Toilet cleaner
- Floor cleaner

Color coding:

  • Red – toilets
  • Blue – general areas
  • Green – surfaces

Dilute as per instructions. No guessing.

One wrong cloth — and you spread dirt instead of cleaning.

Hygiene & Safety Standards

No shortcuts here.

Personal Hygiene:

- Clean uniform
- Regular hand washing
- Gloves for waste

Cross-Contamination Control:

- Separate tools for bathroom and bedroom
- Proper waste disposal
- Do not reuse dirty cloths

Chemical Safety:

- Do not mix chemicals
- Use labeled containers
- Follow safety instructions

Ergonomic Safety:

- Proper lifting
- Avoid strain
- Maintain posture

Deep-clean includes mattress sanitization, upholstery cleaning, ventilation maintenance.

Inspection & Quality Control

This is the checkpoint. Pass or fail.

Inspection Checklist:

- All surfaces clean
- Bed tight, linen correct
- Bathroom clean, no odor
- Amenities in place
- Lights, AC, fixtures working
- Floor clean

Supervisor checks within 5 minutes.

If something is wrong — fix it immediately.

Also watch:

  • Random audits
  • Guest feedback
  • Retraining

Digital systems track room readiness and staff performance.

Room is not ready when you leave. It’s ready when it passes.
