Hao Hao Chinese & Vietnamese Restaurant is planning a new location in Austin’s Arbor Trails shopping center, marking a return to the city after the closure of its longtime South Austin site.
Hao Hao Chinese & Vietnamese Restaurant Plans Expansion in Austin
A beloved Asian dining concept, Hao Hao Chinese & Vietnamese Restaurant, is preparing to expand in Austin with plans for a new location in the city’s Arbor Trails retail center.
Recent permitting filings suggest the restaurant is working on developing a new outlet at 4301 W. William Cannon Drive in the Shops at Arbor Trails. The proposed project would involve building renovations and interior construction to transform an existing space into a full-service restaurant.
Return to Austin
The expansion would mark a return to the Austin market after the closure of Hao Hao’s longtime South Austin restaurant.
The original location operated for approximately 35 years before shutting down in late 2024 when the owners retired, ending a long chapter in the local dining scene.
The new project signals renewed interest in serving customers within the city limits again, particularly those who previously frequented the restaurant’s former location on West William Cannon Drive.
Details of the Proposed Location
According to permit filings, the planned Arbor Trails restaurant would occupy roughly 2,800 square feet within the shopping center. Construction work is expected to include plumbing, electrical, mechanical and interior improvements to prepare the space for restaurant operations.
The project has an estimated investment of about $480,000, with construction tentatively scheduled between May and August if approvals and timelines proceed as planned.
The Shops at Arbor Trails is a high‑traffic retail destination in southwest Austin, anchored by major grocery and retail brands and surrounded by densely populated neighborhoods.
Continuing the Brand’s Growth
Hao Hao has continued expanding its presence in the greater Austin area in recent years.
The family‑run concept already operates locations in nearby cities, including Round Rock and Georgetown, serving a menu that blends Chinese and Vietnamese culinary traditions. Dishes typically include pho, noodle bowls, stir‑fried dishes and classic Chinese‑American favorites.
Looking Ahead
If the new location opens as planned, it will represent a comeback for the Hao Hao brand in Austin and provide longtime fans with a closer option after the closure of the original restaurant.
The project also reflects the continued growth of the city’s restaurant industry, where established regional concepts are increasingly expanding to serve Austin’s rapidly growing population.
