India Hotel Industry Growth Set to Accelerate in Fiscal 2027

India hotel industry growth is expected to accelerate in fiscal 2027, driven by leisure demand, weddings, MICE recovery and limited new room supply.

Domes catch the late afternoon light along a lakeside palace hotel, its terraces filling slowly as wedding guests arrive ahead of an evening ceremony, a rhythm repeating itself across Rajasthan and Goa more often this year than in seasons past. That quiet, steady momentum sits behind new projections for India hotel industry growth, with brokerage PhillipCapital expecting the sector to accelerate through the second half of fiscal year 2027.

What Is Driving the Acceleration

According to a sector report from PhillipCapital India, the Singapore based PhillipCapital Group's Indian arm, growth will be driven primarily by domestic leisure demand alongside a recovery in corporate and international travel. A heavier wedding calendar, improving MICE activity, and a seasonal rise in international travel expected from October are all cited as factors supporting demand in the months ahead. Limited new hotel supply in key markets adds a further layer of support, potentially sustaining both room rates and RevPAR even as demand strengthens.

Leisure Outpacing Business Travel

The first quarter of fiscal year 2027 already showed leisure markets outperforming business focused locations by a wide margin. Indian Hotels Co. Ltd. recorded high 20 percent RevPAR growth in Rajasthan and Goa, while Chalet Hotels' resorts grew 19 percent compared with roughly 5 percent for its business hotels. Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts posted an even sharper divide, with resorts delivering 24 percent RevPAR growth against 14 percent for city properties, a pattern consistent across multiple major operators.

Corporate and International Travel Still Recovering

Corporate travel faced headwinds from geopolitical uncertainty and tighter travel budgets, while international traffic declined amid disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict. Domestic air passenger traffic rose 1.2 percent year over year to 86.3 million in the first quarter, while international traffic fell 10.2 percent to 17.9 million, pulling total passenger movement down 0.9 percent to 104.2 million overall.

Signs of Improvement Within the Quarter

Monthly trends showed meaningful improvement as the quarter progressed. Domestic passenger growth peaked at 7.7 percent in May before easing to a 1.2 percent decline in June, while the drop in international traffic narrowed considerably, from 18.3 percent in February to just 4.7 percent by June, suggesting the sharpest disruptions may already be easing.

Strong Earnings Across Major Operators

Among companies tracked by PhillipCapital, Leela reported 28 percent revenue growth and 41 percent EBITDA growth for the first quarter of fiscal 2027. IHCL's revenue rose 15 percent with EBITDA up 18 percent, ITC Hotels posted 8 percent RevPAR growth, and Lemon Tree Hotels saw occupancy increase by 314 basis points. PhillipCapital noted that pricing remained intact across the sector even where occupancy softened in certain markets, a detail suggesting operators retained meaningful pricing power despite uneven demand.

A Broader Regional Framework Taking Shape

Beyond individual company performance, BRICS tourism ministers adopted the Jaipur Declaration on August 21, aimed at strengthening cooperation among member countries across artificial intelligence, sustainable tourism, skills development, investment, data exchange and travel facilitation, positioning India's growth story within a wider regional context.

What Limited Supply Means for the Months Ahead

As new construction continues to lag behind demand in several key leisure markets, a dynamic echoed in hospitality expansion trends playing out elsewhere in Asia, operators positioned in high demand leisure corridors like Rajasthan and Goa appear well placed to sustain both occupancy and pricing through the coming wedding and travel season.

What the Numbers Ultimately Reflect

Behind every RevPAR percentage and passenger count sits something simpler, a wedding party checking into a lakeside suite, a family choosing a weekend in Goa over a business trip abroad. As India's hotel sector heads into its stronger second half, that quiet accumulation of ordinary choices remains the real engine behind the numbers analysts are now watching closely.
