PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico — A 28-year-old Mexican national is dead after being dragged into the ocean by a crocodile at a popular tourist beach on Friday evening.

Jalisco State Police confirmed the fatality Sunday following a frantic search and rescue operation that lasted through the night. The victim was reportedly at the Marina Vallarta Beach, situated directly adjacent to the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa, when the attack occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. local time. His body was recovered on Saturday morning, roughly 300 meters offshore.

A Failed Rescue Attempt

The scene was chaotic. Jamie Yetter and her fiancé, Chris Bury, were lounging by the resort pool when they heard what they initially assumed were cries for help from a swimmer caught in a rip current. Bury didn’t hesitate; he grabbed a nearby kayak and paddled out into the murky water.

"There were no oars. There was really nothing at the beach at all to help," Bury told reporters. "I was on the kayak right when he got pulled under."

Yetter witnessed the encounter from the shore, describing a reptile of terrifying proportions. She told ABC7 that the animal’s head was roughly the size of her own torso, with a tail that appeared thicker than her legs. "He was just turning him, taking him under," she said. By the time Bury reached the location, the victim had already been submerged. The water was too dark to track him.

A Lingering Pattern of Danger

Look, this isn't the first time these waters have seen a headline like this. You’d think the area would be locked down tighter, but the truth is, these animals are apex survivors.

This specific stretch of coastline has a documented history of human-crocodile conflict. Back in 2022, two tourists from Colorado were mauled in the same vicinity. In that incident, one man entered the water at night—a massive mistake in croc territory—and the second man was bitten while trying to pull his friend to safety. Both survived, but they walked away with severe injuries to their limbs and torsos.

Ongoing Questions

The authorities in Jalisco haven’t provided much beyond the bare facts. Both the state police and the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa have remained largely silent, failing to respond to repeated requests for comment from media outlets as of Sunday afternoon.

What’s interesting, and frankly frustrating, is the lack of visible, aggressive signage warning tourists about the specific hazards of swimming near these estuary mouths at dusk. It’s a resort area. People come here to relax, not to keep one eye on the horizon for a predator. Whether the hotel or local government bears any responsibility for the lack of beach closures is going to be the next big question once the dust settles on this investigation. For now, it’s just another tragic reminder that nature doesn't care about your vacation plans.
