New Delhi, April 2026 — Marriott International has introduced its Autograph Collection Hotels brand in India with the conversion of the 176-room Noormahal property in Karnal, marking a significant addition to its growing portfolio in South Asia. The launch brings the region’s total Marriott hotels to 235, including 220 in India.

The debut underscores Marriott’s continued expansion momentum in India, where the company recorded a peak year of signings in 2025 with 99 deals representing over 12,000 rooms. Despite short-term disruptions in travel flows linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, the company reported no slowdown in development activity or pipeline growth.

176-key Noormahal transitions to Autograph Collection

The Noormahal property, located along the Grand Trunk Road in Karnal, has been repositioned under the Autograph Collection brand. Known for its extensive collection of art and artefacts and its architectural influences drawn from Mughal and Rajputana styles, the hotel will retain its independent identity while aligning with Marriott’s global standards.

The property serves as a strategic stopover between major northern cities and leisure destinations, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Shimla, and Dehradun. It is situated along NH44 and is accessible within approximately two hours from both Chandigarh International Airport and Indira Gandhi International Airport, with Karnal Railway Station located about 15 minutes away.

The conversion reflects the brand’s core positioning, which focuses on integrating distinctive, story-driven independent hotels into a global distribution network without standardising their identity.

India leads Marriott’s Asia Pacific signings in 2025

India emerged as Marriott International’s strongest market in the Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC) region in terms of deal activity in 2025. The country led signings ahead of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Japan, highlighting its strategic importance within the group’s regional growth plans.

The company reported a record 99 signings in India during the year, translating into more than 12,000 rooms. This performance was driven by infrastructure development, expansion of airport networks, and sustained growth in domestic travel demand.

According to company leadership, the development pipeline continues to show resilience, with no decline in deal flow or investor interest despite external market challenges affecting certain travel corridors.

Selective expansion planned for Autograph Collection

The Autograph Collection brand, originally launched in 2010, follows a selective growth strategy, focusing on hotels with unique narratives and distinct character rather than standardised development. The entry into India marks the beginning of a curated expansion approach for the brand within the country.

In addition to the Karnal property, Marriott indicated that the Sun-n-Sand hotel in Mumbai will transition into an Autograph Collection property. Another project in Goa is also in development, further expanding the brand’s footprint across key leisure and urban markets.

This approach allows Marriott to tap into properties with strong local identity while integrating them into its global ecosystem, including access to its loyalty programme and distribution channels.

Pipeline activity continues across multiple brands

Marriott International’s development activity in India remains broad-based, spanning multiple brands and segments. Key signings in the first quarter of 2026 include a Fairfield hotel in Ujjain, a Tribute Portfolio property in Karjat, a St. Regis hotel in Bengaluru, and the introduction of the City Express by Marriott brand in Udaipur.

These additions reflect a diversified expansion strategy targeting business hubs, pilgrimage destinations, and emerging leisure markets. The company continues to leverage both new developments and conversions to scale its presence across the country.

The expansion also aligns with Marriott’s long-term growth outlook, supported by increasing domestic travel, rising demand for branded accommodations, and improved connectivity across regions.

Conversion strategy supports portfolio growth

The introduction of Autograph Collection Hotels in India highlights Marriott’s broader strategy of leveraging conversions to accelerate portfolio expansion. By partnering with existing properties that offer unique positioning, the company can rapidly increase inventory while maintaining brand differentiation.

For the Noormahal property, the partnership enables access to Marriott’s global network of over 271 million loyalty programme members, while preserving its heritage and architectural identity. The collaboration is positioned as both a commercial and strategic milestone for the property and the region.

As Marriott approaches its centenary milestone, the company continues to scale its global footprint, with expectations of reaching 10,000 hotels worldwide in the near term. The addition of the Autograph Collection brand in India forms part of this broader growth trajectory, reinforcing the country’s role as a key market within its global portfolio.
