Mumbai police file FIR against hotel owner and manager over illegal use of domestic LPG cylinders

Mumbai police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against a hotel owner and manager for the illegal use of domestic LPG cylinders at a commercial property in the city, officials said, citing violations of safety regulations and commercial gas usage norms during an inspection conducted in March 2026.

The action was taken following a joint inspection by local police and relevant authorities, who identified that domestic-use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders were being used for commercial cooking purposes at the hotel. Officials said such usage violates existing safety and distribution regulations governing LPG supply in India.

Inspection and violations identified

Authorities conducted the inspection at the hotel premises after receiving information regarding possible regulatory breaches. During the visit, officials discovered multiple domestic LPG cylinders being used in the kitchen area instead of approved commercial gas connections.

Officials said domestic LPG cylinders are subsidised and intended strictly for household use, while commercial establishments are required to use non-subsidised commercial cylinders that meet higher safety and capacity standards.

The inspection team documented the number of cylinders and the setup in which they were being used, forming the basis of the complaint filed against the hotel’s management.

FIR and legal provisions

Police registered the FIR against the hotel owner and manager under relevant sections of the Essential Commodities Act and other applicable laws governing the misuse of subsidised LPG. Authorities said the case also involves potential violations of fire safety and municipal regulations.

An official stated that using domestic LPG cylinders in commercial establishments can pose safety risks due to differences in pressure, usage patterns and regulatory oversight. “Such violations are treated seriously due to the associated safety concerns,” the official said.

Investigators are reviewing records related to procurement and usage of the cylinders to determine the duration and extent of the violation.

Officials said improper use of LPG cylinders increases the risk of fire hazards, particularly in high-usage environments such as hotel kitchens. Commercial LPG systems are designed with additional safety mechanisms and compliance checks that are not applicable to domestic cylinders.
