Novotel Hyderabad Airport Secures Third Green Key Certification
Novotel Hyderabad Airport renews Green Key certification for the third year, highlighting energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management initiatives.
HYDERABAD – April 14, 2026 – Novotel Hyderabad Airport has renewed its Green Key certification for the third consecutive year, maintaining its position as the first hotel in South India and the third in the country to achieve the sustainability recognition. The renewal reflects continued compliance with environmental benchmarks across energy, water, waste, and community engagement.
The certification process requires hotels to demonstrate measurable progress in sustainability practices, with periodic assessments covering operational systems and infrastructure. The latest renewal confirms the property’s ongoing efforts to integrate environmental management into daily hotel operations.
Third consecutive certification underscores sustainability compliance
Novotel Hyderabad Airport initially secured the Green Key certification as an early adopter in India’s hospitality sector. Retaining the certification for three consecutive years highlights the hotel’s adherence to evolving environmental standards and its ability to maintain consistent performance across multiple sustainability parameters.
The Green Key programme evaluates hotels based on criteria including energy consumption, water efficiency, waste management, and social responsibility. Continued certification requires ongoing improvements and documentation of environmental impact reduction measures.
Energy systems include solar panels and non-CFC cooling
The hotel has implemented a range of energy management initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. It operates using 100 percent non-CFC (chlorofluorocarbon-free) coolants, aligning with global efforts to minimise ozone-depleting substances in cooling systems.
Lighting across the property has been upgraded with more than 6,000 LED bulbs, contributing to lower electricity consumption. In addition, the hotel uses 200 solar panels dedicated to water heating, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and supporting renewable energy integration.
These measures form part of a broader strategy to improve energy efficiency while maintaining operational standards expected in full-service hospitality environments.
Water conservation saves up to 10,000 litres daily
Water management remains a key focus area under the hotel’s sustainability framework. The property has installed approximately 1,500 aerators across various outlets, resulting in daily water savings of up to 10,000 litres.
Further conservation is supported by rainwater harvesting systems, which capture and store rainwater for reuse. The hotel also operates an on-site sewage treatment plant, enabling treated water to be reused for non-potable applications.
Combined, these systems contribute to the recycling of around 140 kilolitres of water per day, significantly reducing dependence on fresh water sources and enhancing resource efficiency.
Waste reduction initiatives target plastic and organic output
As part of its waste management strategy, the hotel has introduced a glass water bottling plant, eliminating the need for approximately 30,000 plastic bottles each month. This initiative addresses single-use plastic reduction, a key requirement under sustainability certifications.
Organic waste generated on the property is processed and converted into manure, which is then used in the hotel’s herb garden. This closed-loop approach reduces landfill contribution while supporting on-site landscaping and food production needs.
These initiatives align with broader industry efforts to minimise waste generation and improve circular resource use within hotel operations.
Structured approach integrates sustainability into operations
According to the hotel’s management, sustainability practices are embedded into operational systems rather than treated as standalone initiatives. This includes resource monitoring, infrastructure upgrades, and guest engagement strategies designed to support environmental objectives.
The Green Key renewal indicates that the hotel continues to meet international standards for environmental management while adapting its processes to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
As sustainability becomes a core focus across the hospitality sector, certifications such as Green Key are increasingly used to benchmark performance and demonstrate compliance with global environmental practices. Novotel Hyderabad Airport’s continued certification reflects a structured and measurable approach to sustainability within a competitive market.
