Pune Man Duped in Online Hotel Review Scam Linked to Telegram Cyber Fraud

A resident of Pune has reportedly fallen victim to an online cyber fraud involving a fake hotel review task scam conducted through the messaging platform Telegram. Authorities say the victim was lured by promises of easy earnings through simple online tasks.

According to reports, the scammers approached the victim with an offer to earn money by posting hotel reviews online. The scheme initially involved small payments to build trust before the victim was asked to transfer larger sums as part of so‑called “task upgrades.”

How the Scam Operated

The fraudsters allegedly used Telegram groups and messages to assign tasks that involved reviewing hotels or interacting with hospitality listings online. Victims were promised commissions for completing these activities.

Initially, participants were given small returns to convince them that the system was legitimate. However, as the scheme progressed, victims were asked to deposit larger amounts of money to unlock higher‑paying tasks.

Financial Loss Reported

The Pune resident eventually realized the fraud after transferring a significant amount of money without receiving the promised payouts. Once the payments stopped, the scammers reportedly cut off communication.

Growing Concern Over Online Task Scams

Cybercrime experts have warned that fake job offers involving hotel reviews, app ratings, and online engagement tasks are becoming increasingly common. These scams typically exploit individuals looking for part‑time income opportunities.

Law enforcement agencies have advised people to remain cautious when approached with online job offers that promise quick earnings and require upfront payments or deposits.
