Quick-Service Restaurant Sales Weaken

Quick-service restaurant sales declined 1 percent in the latest survey week. The segment recorded less than 1 percent growth for June overall, compared with 2 percent growth in May and around 1 to 2 percent growth in April. During the second quarter, quick-service restaurants averaged 1 to 2 percent growth, below the first quarter's 2.2 percent growth rate.

Casual Dining Sales Decline Continues

The casual dining sales decline continued during the final week of June, with sales slipping by less than 1 percent. The segment averaged a 1 percent decline for the month, matching May's performance. Second-quarter results also averaged a 1 percent decline, improving from the first quarter's steeper 1.6 percent drop.

Fast Casual Sales Growth Leads the Industry

Fast casual sales growth remained the strongest among all restaurant categories. The segment posted 7 percent comparable sales growth in the latest week and averaged 10 percent growth for June. This was well above the 5 percent growth reported in both April and May. Baird noted that one large participant with company-specific factors contributed significantly to the improvement.

Coffee Concepts Deliver Stable Performance

Coffee concept restaurants posted 4 to 5 percent comparable sales growth in the final week of June. The segment averaged 3 to 4 percent growth for the month, remaining in line with May while slightly below April's 5 percent increase. Overall, coffee concepts averaged close to 4 percent growth during the second quarter.

Baird Restaurant Industry Report Outlook

The latest Baird survey restaurant sales report presents a mixed outlook for the second half of 2026. While quick-service restaurant sales and casual dining remained under pressure, fast casual sales growth and coffee concepts continued to show resilience.
