KENNESAW, Ga., June 10, 2026 — Joupe Jeht, a new carryout restaurant serving homestyle Cambodian cuisine, opened May 30 off Jiles Road in Kennesaw, bringing a culinary tradition largely absent from Cobb County to the north Atlanta suburbs. Co-owners Jude Downs and Sreyya Hammond developed the concept together over several years, starting from a shared meal at a wedding and building toward a brick-and-mortar business rooted equally in cultural identity and personal friendship.
The name Joupe Jeht means "unforgettable" in Khmer, the official language of Cambodia a word that captures both the owners' aspirations for their food and the personal significance the project holds for Downs, who was born in Cambodia, adopted as an infant and raised by American parents in metro Atlanta.
A Menu Built on Family Recipes and Cultural Pride
The menu at Joupe Jeht centres on traditional Cambodian dishes prepared with the care and personal touch Hammond, who has cooked Cambodian food since the age of 11, brings to every recipe. Downs and Hammond describe Cambodian cuisine not as a fixed set of dishes defined by strict regional rules, but as a cuisine shaped by the love and individuality each family brings to the kitchen.
"It's the care and the love that's put into it more than just, 'This is how you're supposed to make it,'" Downs said.
Among the menu highlights are pork nom bao, a steamed sweet bun with a rich pork filling; mee cha, a stir-fried noodle bowl with chicken and crisp vegetables cooked to order in a wok; a chicken teriyaki bowl combining grilled chicken in teriyaki sauce with pickled papaya and vegetables; and mango sticky rice, a dessert of sweet rice served with fresh mango slices. The menu offers a compact but considered selection that allows Hammond to maintain the quality and attention each dish requires.

From Wedding Food Stall to Storefront — A Six-Year Journey
The origins of Joupe Jeht stretch back to 2020, when Downs and his wife were planning their wedding and decided to serve Cambodian food as a way to honour Downs' heritage. They contacted a Cambodian Buddhist temple in Lithonia, who recommended Hammond. The collaboration on the wedding menu drew the two families close, and Hammond began teaching Downs the foundations of Cambodian cooking.
Hammond, who was born and raised in Cambodia and immigrated to the United States in 2006, had worked as a cook in various restaurants since arriving. Her approach to food reflects her upbringing. "I love cooking, it's my passion," she said. "I like the food, I like when people eat the food and they're so happy to taste the food."
The pair tested their concept at local festivals and farmers markets under the Joupe Jeht name, with their first public appearance at an event in April 2024. The food stand quickly built a following. By early 2025, Downs and Hammond felt confident enough to sign a lease for a storefront on Jiles Road, taking over a space previously occupied by Grand Slam Pizza.
Carryout First, With Eyes on a Larger Future
Joupe Jeht operates as a carryout-only restaurant for now, a deliberate decision by Downs and Hammond to give themselves the space to adapt to a full commercial kitchen and develop their operational skills before expanding. Both co-owners brought relevant experience to the venture: Hammond from years of restaurant cooking, and Downs from running a Chick-fil-A while completing his entrepreneurship degree at Kennesaw State University.
The carryout format reflects the owners' long-term thinking rather than a limitation. Downs views the current space as a training ground for what comes next. "Really, the heart of the restaurant is in the kitchen," he said. "If we can learn as much as we can in this space, we'll be way more confident to move onto the next one." The pair have stated their intention to eventually expand to a larger restaurant with dine-in service.
Joupe Jeht is located off Jiles Road in Kennesaw, Georgia. Further details are available via the restaurant's social media channels.
