SAMASTIPUR, June 23, 2026 — An old train coach is turning into a luxury restaurant at a Bihar railway station as part of a commercial initiative by Indian Railways to enhance passenger amenities and generate non-fare revenue.
The rail coach restaurant project at Shahpur Patori station near Samastipur will see an unused coach repurposed into a modern dining space, railway officials said. The restaurant will serve local and fast-casual food options, offering travelers and residents a new place to eat.
Rail Coach Restaurant Project Explained
The Sonpur division of East Central Railway allocated the site for a rail coach restaurant for five years through electronic tendering, officials said. This marks the fifth coach restaurant under this scheme in the division and reflects a broader effort to use old assets for commercial benefit.
Railway spokesperson Anil Verma said the restaurant is expected to boost non-fare revenue by around ₹8,44,566 annually from food services and station footfall.

The converted coach will offer seating, food counters, and a dining environment distinct from typical station stalls. Local vendors and visitors are likely to use the space for meals during waits or transit. Railway officials highlighted that the initiative adds value for passengers at smaller stations with limited amenities.
Station manager Ravi Singh noted the restaurant reflects Indian Railways’ strategy to improve station experiences beyond basic services.
