Thai Restaurants Keep Food Prices Steady Despite Fuel Cost Drop

BANGKOK, July 09, 2026 — Prepared food prices in Thailand are expected to remain unchanged despite recent declines in domestic fuel prices, according to the Thai Restaurant Association. Restaurant operators say lower transport costs alone are not enough to offset broader operating expenses, including rent, labour and raw materials.
Industry leaders believe cheaper fuel could improve consumer confidence over time, but they do not expect menu prices to fall immediately as businesses continue to manage higher inventories and fixed operating costs.
Prepared Food Prices in Thailand Remain Under Pressure
Thai Restaurant Association President Thaniwan Kulmongkol said many restaurants increased menu prices after fuel costs surged during the conflict in the Middle East. Although diesel prices have dropped significantly in recent months, many businesses are still using inventory purchased when costs were higher.
She added that expenses such as electricity, rent, wages and packaging have not declined alongside fuel prices. Key ingredients, including vegetable oil, also remain expensive, limiting the ability of restaurants to reduce menu prices.
Restaurants Monitor Competition Before Adjusting Prices
According to the association, restaurant operators are also watching customer demand and competitor pricing before making changes. Businesses may avoid lowering prices unless similar action is taken across the market.
The association noted that food prices generally increase quickly during periods of rising costs but often take longer to decline when market conditions improve.
Lower Fuel Prices Could Support Consumer Spending
Business groups said reduced fuel prices may help ease household expenses and improve purchasing power over time. However, Thailand's economy continues to face slower consumer spending, while manufacturers and retailers remain cautious because of ongoing regional trade challenges and increased competition from imported products.
Separately, representatives from Thailand's steel industry said lower fuel prices could reduce transportation costs and help moderate inflation, though energy prices remain vulnerable to geopolitical developments.
