AHMEDABAD, June 7, 2026 — A restaurant blaze at Ellisbridge in Ahmedabad caused local alarm on Saturday evening as thick smoke billowed from the venue, prompting a rapid emergency response though no injuries were reported.

Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) rushed several fire tenders to the scene at the Devnandan Complex near M J Library after staff and diners evacuated Treasure Dine restaurant ahead of firefighters’ arrival, authorities said.

Restaurant blaze at Ellisbridge draws quick response

Fire officials said the substantial smoke from the blaze made the situation appear serious to onlookers, drawing crowds and disrupting nearby traffic. Fire crews brought the smoke and flames under control within a short period, ensuring the safety of guests in adjoining hotels and businesses despite the dense smoke.

"We discovered that tissue paper stored near a cold storage unit ignited from generated heat, causing the smoke," said Amit Dongre, chief fire officer with AFES. "The team contained it quickly, and there were no casualties."

Potential risk in crowded commercial building

Officials noted the incident highlighted how quickly a small fire can create dangerous conditions in a crowded mixed-use complex. The Devnandan Complex houses restaurants, hotels and accommodation units, prompting firefighters to ensure no fire spread beyond the restaurant.

"Had the fire spread to the upper floors or adjacent units, evacuation operations could have become more complex," a fire officer said, explaining the urgent actions taken at the scene.

Safety concerns and investigation

Authorities confirmed the exact cause of the blaze is under investigation and stressed proper storage of combustible items around heat-producing equipment. Fire department sources said the incident could prompt a review of safety practices across similar establishments in the city.

Crowds gathered outside the complex during the emergency, with many recording the scene on mobile phones as the fire crews worked to secure the area.
