The Pentagon and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are preparing to conduct tests on a high‑energy anti‑drone laser system following recent incidents that led to temporary airspace closures in Texas.

The testing is scheduled to take place at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico and is intended to address aviation safety concerns related to the use of directed‑energy systems in airspace shared with civilian aircraft.

The decision comes after two separate incidents in recent weeks when military deployments of anti‑drone lasers prompted the FAA to close portions of airspace in Texas. One closure occurred near El Paso after authorities used the technology without prior coordination with aviation regulators, leading to temporary disruption for commercial flights. 

In another incident, the U.S. military used the laser system to disable what was believed to be a threatening drone near the U.S.–Mexico border. The drone was later identified as belonging to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, raising concerns among lawmakers about communication between federal agencies. 

Officials say the upcoming tests are meant to evaluate the safety of the laser system, including its potential impact on aircraft materials and flight operations. The testing will also assess safety mechanisms designed to prevent risks to pilots and aircraft operating nearby.

Counter‑drone technology has become an increasing priority for U.S. authorities due to the growing number of drone incursions reported along the southern border. Military officials say the technology could help neutralize unauthorized drones more efficiently than traditional missile‑based systems.

However, the earlier incidents highlighted the importance of coordination between defense agencies and aviation regulators when such systems are used in domestic airspace.

The Pentagon and FAA say the new testing program will help establish clearer safety procedures to ensure that counter‑drone operations can be conducted without disrupting civilian air traffic.
