Sri Vijaya Puram, April 2026: Tourism and hospitality stakeholders in the Andaman region have initiated discussions to integrate locally produced Self-Help Group (SHG) products into hotels and tourism networks, aiming to enhance market access for indigenous goods while strengthening local livelihoods.

A joint meeting involving representatives from hotel associations, cab operators, and SHGs was held at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Institutions (RD and PRIs) at Marine Hill. The session focused on creating structured collaboration between the hospitality sector and grassroots producers to promote locally made products across tourist touchpoints.

Collaboration Between Hospitality and SHGs Gains Momentum

The meeting brought together key stakeholders from the tourism ecosystem, including hoteliers, transport operators, and SHG representatives. Discussions centred on developing partnerships that would enable the supply and promotion of locally produced goods within hotels and associated tourism services.

Participants explored practical mechanisms through which SHG products could be incorporated into the guest experience. This includes supplying items directly to hotels, enabling display within premises, and integrating products into broader tourism offerings.

The initiative reflects a growing trend within the hospitality sector to support local sourcing and community engagement, particularly in destination-driven markets where tourists seek authentic and region-specific experiences.

Demand for Indigenous Products Drives Strategy

Stakeholders highlighted a noticeable rise in tourist interest in indigenous and locally crafted products. This shift in consumer preference has created opportunities for SHGs to align their production with market demand, particularly in categories such as handicrafts, souvenirs, and locally inspired goods.

Discussions emphasised the need for standardisation and quality alignment to ensure that SHG products meet the expectations of both domestic and international travellers. Participants noted that consistency in product quality, packaging, and presentation would be critical for successful integration into hospitality channels.

The focus on demand-driven production is expected to enable SHGs to scale operations while maintaining relevance within the competitive tourism marketplace.

Proposal for Dedicated Retail Spaces in Hotels

One of the key proposals discussed during the meeting was the establishment of dedicated sales outlets and display counters for SHG products within hotels and at major tourist locations. These spaces would serve as direct points of sale, increasing product visibility and accessibility for visitors.

Hospitality stakeholders expressed support for the initiative, noting that such retail integration could enhance the overall guest experience while contributing to local economic development. By offering curated local products within hotel environments, operators can also differentiate their offerings and strengthen destination branding.

The concept aligns with broader industry practices where hotels increasingly function as platforms for showcasing regional culture, crafts, and culinary traditions.

Strengthening Local Livelihoods Through Tourism Linkages

The collaboration is expected to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for SHG members by providing consistent market access and reducing dependency on fragmented distribution channels. By linking production directly with tourism demand, the initiative aims to generate stable income streams for local communities.

Stakeholders acknowledged that the hospitality sector plays a critical role as an aggregator of demand, with hotels and transport networks serving as key interfaces between tourists and local economies. Leveraging this ecosystem can significantly enhance the reach of SHG products.

The meeting concluded with a consensus on formalising partnerships between SHGs and tourism stakeholders, with a shared objective of building an integrated model that supports both economic inclusion and destination development.

Aligning Tourism Growth with Community Development

The proposed collaboration reflects a broader policy and industry focus on inclusive growth within tourism-driven regions. By embedding local enterprises into the hospitality value chain, stakeholders aim to ensure that tourism benefits are distributed more equitably across communities.

The initiative also supports the positioning of Andaman as a destination that offers authentic, locally rooted experiences. Integrating SHG products into hotels and tourist circuits not only enhances visitor engagement but also strengthens the region’s cultural and economic ecosystem.

As discussions move toward implementation, the success of the initiative will depend on coordination between stakeholders, standardisation of product offerings, and sustained engagement between SHGs and hospitality operators.
