Chapter Hotels & Resorts Now Opens in Northeast India
Chapter Hotels & Resorts launches in Northeast India with Chapter Lakeside Tripura as its first property, led by Polo Hotels Group's 35-year regional experience.
Chapter Hotels & Resorts has arrived with a proposition that places destination before decor, culture before comfort, and local story before brand consistency. Polo Hotels Group, which has operated across Northeast India since 1986, launched the boutique brand this week with a guiding principle that sets it apart from most hotel launches of its kind. The place comes first.
Deval Tibrewalla, WTD and CEO of Hotel Polo Towers Limited, explained the name in terms that capture the brand's entire philosophy. "We called it Chapter because every hotel opens a new part of the destination for the guest," he said. "Same brand energy, different local story. The plan is to build more soon, each with its own voice." That framing is not marketing language. It is a structural commitment that each Chapter property will be built around what its specific location offers rather than what a centralized brand template demands.
Chapter Hotels & Resorts: The First Property in Tripura
Chapter Lakeside in Tripura will be the brand's debut property. A 17-key resort on the shores of Rudrasagar Lake, it sits approximately ninety minutes from Agartala Airport and positions itself around one of the state's most prominent natural and cultural landmarks. Views of the Neermahal Palace, a historic water palace on the lake, will be visible from the pool and several rooms. The palace and the lake together give the resort a setting that no amount of interior design can substitute.
The resort will feature a lake-view swimming pool, poolside bar, all-day dining, and boat transfers that integrate the water directly into the guest experience rather than treating the lake as a backdrop. Opening is scheduled for later this year.
Chapter Hotels Northeast India: Food and Culture at the Centre
Food will not be a secondary feature at Chapter properties. At Chapter Lakeside, the culinary programme draws from Kokborok and Mui Borok traditions, using local herbs, river fish, bamboo shoots, and banana flowers. The bar focuses on local botanicals and Tripura's emerging craft beverage culture. This is not an interpretation of regional food filtered through a hotel kitchen's preferences. It is a menu built from what the land around the property actually produces.
Tibrewalla described the Chapter approach to upscale hospitality in terms that strip away the category's usual associations. "Upscale is not expensive wallpaper. It is good decisions. Put the pool where the view is. Cook food from the region. Build a bar with a point of view. Keep it sharp, warm and local. That is Chapter." The statement is clear enough to function as a design brief and precise enough to hold a team accountable to it.
Cassette Kitchen and Bar as the Social Core
A key feature running across the Chapter brand is Cassette Kitchen and Bar, the social and culinary hub of each property. Ingredients come from tea gardens, hill markets, and local farmers. Menus reflect regional flavours while staying contemporary and accessible rather than presenting local cuisine as something requiring explanation or apology. The bar concept positions Cassette as a destination in its own right rather than an amenity attached to the accommodation.
That distinction matters for a brand targeting younger, experience-driven travellers who evaluate a hotel partly by whether its food and drink program is worth visiting even without a room reservation. A property that draws local visitors to its bar as well as hotel guests builds a different kind of community relationship than one that keeps its doors oriented primarily inward.
Chapter Resort Upper Shillong and the Pipeline Beyond
The second announced Chapter property is a 37-key resort in Meghalaya's Upper Shillong, set among paddy fields and positioned as a distinctive leisure destination near the state capital. Shillong already attracts domestic travelers from across India and from neighboring states, and a boutique resort built around its pool and surrounded by highland agriculture occupies a gap in what the area currently offers.
Beyond these two properties, Chapter Hotels and Resorts has an active development pipeline including properties in West Bengal, Nagaland, and other Northeast destinations. Planned sites include heritage assets, hill stays, cultural locations, and leisure circuits across a region that has historically been underserved by branded upscale hospitality despite its significant natural and cultural depth.
Polo Hotels Group Expansion and Northeast India's Tourism Moment
Polo Hotels Group was founded by Kishan Tibrewalla in Shillong in 1986 and opened Hotel Polo Towers in 1991. Thirty-five years of operating across Northeast India gives the group a regional understanding that newer entrants to the market cannot quickly replicate. The Chapter brand draws on that accumulated knowledge while creating a product category that is deliberately distinct from the group's existing Polo Hotels and Resorts and Max midscale brands.
The launch arrives as Northeast India experiences genuine growth in traveler demand, supported by improved connectivity and rising interest in destinations outside mainstream leisure circuits. Hospitality investment is also spreading to corners of the world where boutique brands are finding that authenticity and local character are more compelling than standardized luxury, a pattern visible in diverse international contexts. Coverage of how Fort George Hotel and Spa in Belize City has built its identity around its tower and Caribbean setting reflects the same underlying philosophy that Chapter Hotels and Resorts is pursuing in Northeast India.
What Chapter Hotels and Resorts Means for the Region
Polo Hotels Group expects the initiative to contribute to local economic development, job creation, and the advancement of hospitality skills within the region. Those outcomes are not separate from the product. They follow naturally from a hotel concept that sources its food locally, employs staff who understand the culture it is selling, and builds its identity around communities rather than around a brand identity created elsewhere.
A wall in the Chapter Lakeside lobby will eventually carry the words that define what every guest is meant to understand before they reach their room: Every Stay. A Chapter. For a brand built in a region where every village, every lake, and every hill market carries a story most travelers have never heard, that is an invitation rather than a tagline. Whether Chapter Hotels and Resorts can deliver on it, property by property, across Northeast India's extraordinary diversity, will be the real story worth following from here.
