Cork International Hotel Hosts 5th Community Spirit Awards Honouring Local Contributors

 Cork International Hotel hosted the fifth edition of its annual Community Spirit Awards, recognising individuals and organisations for their contributions to community development across Cork. The initiative, held in association with The Carrigdhoun Newspaper and Gerald McCarthy Giftware, brought together local stakeholders to honour achievements across social, cultural, and environmental sectors.

The awards programme is positioned as a community-focused initiative that highlights the role of grassroots contributors in shaping local ecosystems. Winners were selected across monthly categories, culminating in overall, public vote, and lifetime achievement recognitions.

Top Honours Recognise Long-Term Community Impact

Helen Noonan received the overall Community Spirit Award for her 30-year involvement with the Cork Women’s and Schoolgirls Soccer League (CWSSL). Recognised for her role as Child Welfare Officer, she was acknowledged for sustained contributions to player welfare, inclusivity, and development across multiple generations.

Noonan’s work largely took place behind the scenes, supporting players, clubs, and families while promoting fairness and safeguarding within the sport. She recently transitioned from her CWSSL role to work with Irish international teams.

The Lifetime Contribution Award was presented to Barry Cogan, a former TD and Senator from Carrigaline. As a founding member of the Carrigaline Community Association, Cogan has been involved in initiatives spanning sports, infrastructure, and cultural development. His contributions include supporting local organisations and facilitating infrastructure projects such as educational institutions.

Public Vote Highlights Grassroots Sports Leadership

The Public Vote Award was secured by Trina O’Neill, Chairperson of Kinsale AFC. With over 13 years of involvement in the club, including nine years as chairperson, O’Neill has overseen the club’s growth to nearly 1,000 members across 30 teams.

Her recognition reflects sustained leadership in grassroots sports development, with contributions extending beyond administration to community engagement and youth participation. The award was determined through public voting, indicating strong local support for her work.

Monthly Winners Reflect Diverse Community Contributions

The awards programme recognised 12 monthly winners across 2025, each representing different aspects of community involvement. These included individuals and groups working in biodiversity, youth organisations, athletics, cultural festivals, and local support initiatives.

Among the monthly awardees were Michael Meaney, Traction Biodiversity Group, St. Theresa’s Girl Guides Passage, Cork City AC athlete Robert Heffernan, Passage West Pace Centre, Roberts Cove Vintage Festival, Carrigaline Musical Society, and Imelda Lynch, among others.

This diversity highlights the broad scope of the awards, which aim to capture contributions across multiple sectors rather than focusing on a single domain.

Hospitality Sector’s Role in Community Engagement

The Cork International Hotel has positioned the Community Spirit Awards as part of its wider engagement with local communities. By hosting the initiative annually, the hotel contributes to recognising non-commercial achievements that impact social and cultural development in the region.

Eoghan Murphy, General Manager of the hotel, noted that the awards serve to highlight individuals and organisations that play a significant role in shaping local communities. He added that the initiative continues to bring attention to efforts that often go unrecognised.

The involvement of Trigon Hotels’ leadership in the judging process further reflects alignment between hospitality operations and community-focused initiatives.

Following the conclusion of the 2025 awards, nominations for the 2026 edition have opened, indicating continuity of the programme. The awards structure, which includes monthly recognition leading to annual honours, is designed to maintain year-round engagement with community contributors.
