La Citadelle Vauban Hotel Project: Accor and Banque des Territoires Announce Historic Luxury Transformation
ambitious La Citadelle Vauban hotel project as Accor and Banque des Territoires partner to transform a 500-year-old French fortress into a luxury Emblems Collection destination by 2027.
BELLE-ÎLE-EN-MER, FRANCE — A 500-year-old French military fortress is set to become one of Europe's most anticipated luxury travel destinations. Global hospitality giant Accor has officially announced a strategic partnership with Banque des Territoires (part of the Caisse des Dépôts group) to fund and execute the La Citadelle Vauban hotel restoration project.
Slated to open its doors in the summer of 2027, the ambitious revival will transform the fully classified historical monument into the very first French address of Accor’s newest luxury brand, the Emblems Collection.
A Massive Heritage and Hospitality Undertaking
Dominating the port of Le Palais for nearly five centuries, La Citadelle Vauban has been closed to the public for several years. Now, backed by the financial muscle of Banque des Territoires' Territoires d'Histoire(s) program and the developmental expertise of Accor, the fortress will be meticulously restored.
Upon completion, the La Citadelle Vauban hotel will feature 90 luxury keys, uniquely distributed across 57 rooms, 24 suites, 6 duplexes, two apartments, and a private house. The sprawling coastal estate will also boast two premium restaurants, a bar, extensive seminar spaces, and a massive wellness destination spanning nearly 2,000 square meters.
"The revival of La Citadelle Vauban is much more than a hotel project," stated Maud Bailly, CEO of Sofitel Legend, Sofitel, MGallery & Emblems. "It is a heritage, cultural, and regional project that aims to bring an exceptional monument back to life while creating lasting value for Belle-Île. By welcoming Banque des Territoires alongside us today, we strengthen this common ambition: to preserve unique heritage by giving it a sustainable future open to its region."
Preserving History Through Modern Utility
To ensure the architectural integrity of the fortress remains untouched, the restoration is being spearheaded by Valode & Pistre Architectes alongside Pierre-Antoine Gatier, the Chief Architect of Historical Monuments.
A central pillar of the project is the complete redesign of the site's museum by Studio Adrien Gardère. Supported by the Fondation du patrimoine, the newly envisioned museum will showcase the island's military and defensive history, featuring restored paintings, ship models, and historical engravings.
"The best way to transmit heritage is to find a use for it," noted Alexandre Giuglaris, CEO of the Fondation du patrimoine. "The project to transform La Citadelle Vauban into a hotel and museum is the best guarantee of its longevity."
Driving Local Economic Impact
Beyond preserving French history, the La Citadelle Vauban hotel project is poised to become an economic engine for the Brittany region.
Once fully operational, the luxury resort will become the largest private employer on Belle-Île-en-Mer, generating over 100 permanent jobs and approximately 70 seasonal positions. Accor has also committed to fostering deep partnerships with local artisans, food producers, and businesses to ensure the economic benefits remain within the island community while maintaining a strict focus on reducing the project's environmental footprint.
Olivier Sichel, CEO of Caisse des Dépôts, emphasized the public interest of the investment. "By committing alongside Accor... we are not only investing in exceptional heritage but also in the future of the Breton region," Sichel said, highlighting that the project perfectly aligns heritage preservation with local economic dynamism.
