Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury Mauritius is often called a palace, but its reviewer found it feels more like a private maison. Debbie Hathway checked in for The Luxury Editor. She describes an intimate, polished and extremely well run hotel with just 69 ocean facing suites.

The resort sits behind discreet gates on the northwest coast, close to Grand Baie. It is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Guests can find more on the Royal Palm Beachcomber website.

Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury Mauritius and Its Legacy

Beachcomber Resorts and Hotels opened Royal Palm in 1985. Mauritius already had famous names like Le Saint Géran and Le Touessrok. Royal Palm offered something different. It was smaller, more discreet and very personal.

It became the island's first member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Forty years on, the sense of occasion remains. So do the generations of guests who return with children and grandchildren. Many long serving staff still remember them.

Suites at Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury Mauritius

The entrance is understated. Guests pass through the lobby and receive a bouquet of fresh flowers. Then comes the view of gardens, pale sand, lagoon and sea.

The reviewer's Palm Suite measured 106m². A timber screen separates the bedroom from the living area. Doors open onto a broad terrace overlooking the gardens, a pool and the ocean. She slept better than in most hotels for a long time.

At the top end sits the recently renovated Royal Villa. It spans 385m² with two bedrooms, a private pool, a gazebo and a cabana. It sleeps up to six guests. Limousine or helicopter transfers add even more personal service.

Service at Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury Mauritius Removes Friction

The real point of the hotel is service. The reviewer says white glove service is about removing friction. She asked for almond milk, and a litre appeared. She mentioned liking papaya out of season. Within an hour the staff found some, and it arrived every afternoon after that.

Tea came on a silver tray held aloft by a butler. Breakfast on the verandah was laid only after the tablecloth had been ironed. Personalised stationery waited in the room. At bedtime, guests can pick pillow mists to calm, refresh or comfort.

The hotel also offers an unpacking and packing service. It saves guests time for the beach or the spa. It sounds extravagant, but in practice it is simply thoughtful.

Staff are known as Artisans. Their philosophy is to feel the happiness you give. Team members try parts of the guest journey themselves. Front Office Manager Jean welcomed the reviewer with a huge bouquet of white flowers.

Baristas spent several attempts perfecting her face on an almond milk cappuccino. Nothing felt forced. Nobody checked in every few minutes. Things seemed to appear before she had asked.

Dining and Family Stays at Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury Mauritius

The food follows the same understated style. La Goélette is the signature restaurant, serving breakfast and dinner by the sea. Asiya offers pan Asian dishes, and Grand Sable sits right on the beach. One favourite meal was Mauritian style grouper, fresh and uncomplicated.

Another favourite was fish nuggets and chips delivered to the beach lounger. Loungers carry guest names and are allocated by accommodation. That means no early morning scramble. A wine tasting brought South African labels into the mix, and live music adds atmosphere.

The resort is family friendly without losing its calm. Ti Royal Kids Club welcomes children aged three to 11. Teenagers have complimentary activities. Adults can use three temperature controlled pools, water and land sports, and fitness coaches. Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18 hole course, is about 10 minutes away.

Wellness and Culture at Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury Mauritius

The Royal Palm Spa partners with Swiss skincare house Valmont. It was recently named Best Valmont Spa. The fitness offer is unusually serious. Pilates equipment goes beyond a few mats and reformers. Coach qualifications are displayed at the refreshment bar.

The reviewer followed a rehabilitation and wellbeing programme. Yoga was adapted to her arm and shoulder limits after surgery. Pilates instructor Ron Achumbit gave her exercises she still uses. Her Valmont facial with therapist Wian was exceptional. Wian recently won Best Valmont Therapist.

Art plays a part too. In 2019 the hotel hosted works by Pablo Picasso after the first Picasso exhibition in the Indian Ocean. A gallery programme continues today. Royal Palm also earned EarthCheck Gold Certification in 2024.

The Verdict on Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury Mauritius

The hotel is not sealed off from the island. Fishermen work from the rocks near the restaurant. Beach vendors still pass by, and Grand Baie lies just beyond the gates. That keeps the resort grounded.

The reviewer says a palace impresses with what it has. A home shows itself through how it makes you feel. Royal Palm does both, but you never forget the second.
