GUWAHATI, June 05, 2026 — A devastating predawn fire killed four members of a single family in the Jalukbari area on Friday, while a separate morning blaze completely gutted a commercial restaurant in the Six Mile neighborhood. Emergency services responded to both locations to contain the flames, marking a tragic day of accidental fires across the city.
The dual incidents have triggered widespread safety concerns among residents regarding domestic gas storage and commercial electrical wiring systems. Municipal authorities announced immediate safety inspections for commercial kitchens across the metropolitan area following the destruction of the property assets.
Jalukbari Fire Traps Family After Cylinder Explosions
The initial disaster occurred around 2:30 AM at a residential compound on Joymati Path within Jaymati Nagar. Flames quickly swept through a rented residential complex owned by Rehena Choudhary, which housed approximately 10 tenant families across 11 rooms.
Neighbours stated that multiple liquefied petroleum gas cylinder explosions shook the compound shortly after the fire began. The rapid expansion of the chemical flames blocked the primary exit paths, trapping victims inside their rooms while eight other families managed to flee into the street.
"They were trapped inside. Everything happened very fast," stated a local resident who witnessed the morning rescue efforts.
First responders recovered the remains of four victims from a single room after bringing the flames under control. Police officials identified the deceased as Kuddus Ali, age 65, Kajoli, age 40, Safiqul, age 30, and Sahid Ali, age 12. The family originally migrated from the Krishnai area of Goalpara district to work in the capital city.
SDRF and Fire Services Recover Victims
Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, Assam Police, State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force managed the joint operation. Teams deployed multiple fire tenders to prevent the wind-driven flames from destroying adjacent wooden homes. Officials sent the recovered bodies to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for official post-mortem examinations.
Property damage extended beyond the primary residence, destroying cash reserves, official identity documents and three motorcycles parked within the compound. Investigators have launched a formal inquiry to pinpoint the exact source of the initial spark before the cylinders ignited.
Separate Blaze Destroys Six Mile Restaurant
Hours after the Jalukbari tragedy, a separate commercial fire broke out inside a prominent restaurant located in the busy Six Mile commercial zone. The facility was completely gutted as the interior decorations, kitchen inventory and seating infrastructure sustained total structural damage.
On-site firefighters confined the commercial blaze to the restaurant premises, preventing an absolute closure of the main arterial roadway. Officials confirmed that no injuries or casualties occurred during the Six Mile incident because the establishment had not yet opened for daily breakfast service.
A senior official from the Fire and Emergency Services, Assam confirmed that preliminary inspections point toward a heavy electrical short circuit in the main kitchen area. Teams are evaluating whether the commercial venue complied with the updated provincial building safety codes.
