MUMBAI, June 30, 2026 — The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspends the licences of six Mumbai restaurants on Tuesday after inspections find rats, expired food and serious hygiene breaches, officials said.

The action affects eateries in Nariman Point, Borivali, Santacruz, Andheri, Bandra and Bhandup during a special food safety enforcement drive aimed at ensuring compliance with public health standards.

FDA cites rats, expired food in licence suspensions

Six eateries, including a restaurant in south Mumbai’s Nariman Point area, lose their food business licences after FDA teams uncover pest infestations, expired stock and misbranded products during inspections carried out from June 26 to June 28.

The inspection at the Nariman Point restaurant on June 27 finds several items that exceed their expiry dates and misbranded food products, prompting authorities to seize and dispose of them on site.

Pest infestations and regulatory lapses found

During raids, FDA officials discover cockroaches and rats in kitchen areas, improper storage of raw food, and poor refrigeration in several establishments, officials say. Inspections also reveal that some businesses lack mandatory documentation and that staff have not completed required health check-ups.

The FDA suspends the licences of these eateries because of “grave shortcomings in cleanliness, poor refrigeration, and the absence of mechanisms to address customer grievances,” according to the agency.

Statewide enforcement campaign continues

The broader enforcement drive across Maharashtra includes 31 raids, seizure of banned food products worth crores and the arrest of individuals involved in the sale, distribution and transport of prohibited items. FDA officials say they will continue inspections and legal action to protect public health.

Authorities urge food business operators to maintain strict sanitation standards and comply with all regulatory requirements before licences can be reinstated.
