Onion Dosa: Hotel Style Recipe , 25- Minute Easy & Instant
Crispy hotel-style Onion Dosa made with rava, rice flour and onions. No grinding or fermentation needed. Ready in 45 minutes.
Dosas hold a special place in Indian breakfast tables, and the Onion Rava Dosa is one of the most requested versions at South Indian restaurants. This hotel-style recipe takes the familiar Rava Dosa base and loads it up with extra onions, a hit of green chilli, and a fragrant tempering of mustard seeds, cumin, and curry leaves. The result is a dosa with a distinctive lacy, crisp edge and a soft, flavorful center.
What makes this version especially convenient is that it skips both grinding and fermentation entirely. There's no need to soak rice or lentils overnight, and no waiting around for the batter to ferment. Just mix, rest briefly, and cook, making it realistic to pull together even on a busy weekday morning. This instant dosa is also a convenient choice for a quick South Indian breakfast.
The onions aren't just for flavor here , they add a pleasant crunch and a subtle sweetness that balances out the heat from the green chilli and the earthiness of the tempering. A scattering of crushed black pepper and coriander leaves rounds out the flavor profile.
About This Onion Rava Dosa Recipe
The batter for this Onion Rava Dosa comes together from rava (semolina), rice flour, a touch of all-purpose or whole wheat flour, chopped onions, green chilli, ginger, and spices, loosened with either water or buttermilk. Once mixed, it just needs to rest for 15 to 20 minutes before you're ready to start cooking.
A quick tempering , mustard seeds crackled in hot oil, followed by cumin seeds and curry leaves , gets stirred into the batter before cooking. This step takes only a few minutes but makes a noticeable difference to the final flavor.
Because there's no fermentation involved, this Onion Rava Dosa can be made and enjoyed the same day, and the batter itself is ready in well under half an hour. It is an easy no fermentation dosa for busy mornings. For the complete original step-by-step method with photos, you can also refer to the original Onion Dosa Recipe on Veg Recipes of India.

Onion Rava Dosa Serving Suggestions
This Onion Rava Dosa pairs well with a range of classic South Indian sides. Here are some of the best ways to serve this crispy hotel style onion dosa:
Coconut Chutney: The mild, creamy flavor of coconut chutney is a natural match for the spiced, crisp dosa.
Sambar: A warm bowl of vegetable sambar rounds out the meal and makes it more filling.
Tomato Chutney: For a tangier pairing, tomato chutney works especially well with the onion flavor.
Ginger Chutney: A spicier, more intense option for those who like extra heat alongside their dosa.
Expert Tips for Onion Rava Dosa
Flour choice: Either all-purpose flour or whole wheat flour works fine in the batter , use whichever you have on hand.
Optional ingredients: Ginger, black pepper, and coriander leaves can all be left out if you prefer a simpler flavor, without affecting the texture of the dosa.
Batter consistency: The batter should be thin, not medium or thick, and completely free of lumps. If it turns out too thin, a little extra rice flour will help thicken it back up.
Buttermilk option: Both water and buttermilk work well for the batter , it's a matter of preference. If using buttermilk, mix curd with water and whisk thoroughly before adding it in.
Pan heat: A heavier pan does best on medium-high heat, while a lighter or thinner pan should be cooked on medium-low to medium heat. If you're exploring more breakfast options, you may also like this Rava Idli Recipe (Easy and No Fermentation).

Directions
Onion dhosa ( hotel style step by step )
Step 1: Make the Batter
Take the rava, rice flour, all-purpose flour, green chillies, ginger, onion, coriander leaves, crushed black pepper in a mixing bowl.
Step 2: Prepare Tempering
Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a small frying pan. Crackle the mustard seeds first on low heat. The mustard seeds should pop before you add the cumin seeds. Then add the cumin and chopped curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds till the cumin browns and splutters.
Step 3: Combine and Rest
Add this tempering mixture together with the oil to the other ingredients in the bowl. Add salt as required. Pour water or buttermilk and make a thin batter without any lumps. Keep the batter to rest for 15 to 20 minutes. The batter should not be thick or of medium consistency. If the dosa batter becomes too thin, then add some rice flour to slightly thicken it.
Step 4: Cook the Dosa
Heat a cast iron skillet or tawa or non-stick pan. Smear a bit oil with a slice of onion or a small piece of cotton fabric or paper napkin. Keep the heat to medium. With a ladle pour the dosa batter from the edges towards the center. Sprinkle ¼ or ½ or 1 teaspoon of oil from the top. Let the base becomes golden and crisp. Flip and cook the other side. When both the sides are cooked, remove the dosa from the pan. Prepare all the dosas this way in batches. While making second dosa stir the batter very well as the rava and the flours settle down at the bottom of the batter in the bowl. Serve the hotel style Onion Dosa hot with coconut chutney or vegetable sambar. This dosa has to be served immediately.
